53 US lawmakers warn Israel for collective punishment in Gaza

20 Aug 2021; MEMO: Fifty-three House Democrats have warned of the grim humanitarian situation in Gaza in a letter to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in which they denounced Israel's collective punishment of Palestinians in the besieged enclave and the occupation state's banning of essential material that are vital to ease Palestinian suffering.

UN to distribute Qatar cash aid to needy families in Gaza

20 Aug 2021; MEMO: The Qatar Committee for the Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and the United Nations (UN) yesterday signed on Thursday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to distribute Qatari aid to 100,000 needy families in the Gaza Strip, a senior diplomat said.

Qatari Ambassador to Palestine and the committee's Chairman, Mohammed al-Emadi, said in a statement that he had signed the MoU with the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland.

Turkey will not be 'Europe's migrant storage unit', Erdogan warns

20 Aug 2021; MEMO: President Tayyip Erdogan yesterday urged European countries to take responsibility for migrants coming from Afghanistan, adding Turkey had no intention of becoming "Europe's migrant storage unit" amid turmoil in the country after the Taliban's takeover, Reuters reported.

Syria: 4 children killed in Assad regime attack on Idlib

20 Aug 2021; MEMO: Four Syrian children were killed today and two civilians injured in shelling by the Assad regime and Iranian-affiliated groups, in breach of a truce, according to Syria Civil Defence.

Regime forces stationed in the village of Biske in the northwestern Idlib province violated the ceasefire by shelling villages in the province's de-escalation zone.

The attack took place in Idlib's village of Kansafra, said Syria Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets.

Israeli Missile Strike Hits Syria’s Quneitra: Report

DAMASCUS, Aug 18 (NNN-SANA) – An Israeli missile strike, targeted military sites in Syria’s south-western province of Quneitra on Tuesday, Syrian state news agency reported.

The strike hit military positions near the town of Hadar, in the northern countryside of Quneitra, the report said.

The report gave no further details about the attack, but the pro-government Sham FM radio, said that, no casualties were reported.

Afghan President Ghani Says He Left To Prevent “Bloodshed”

DUBAI, Aug 19 (NNN-WAM) – Afghan President, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, claimed last night that, he “decided to leave my country in order to prevent bloodshed.”

Ghani made the statement, addressing his compatriots, in their native language Pashto, during a live Facebook broadcast from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ghani said, “If I had stayed, I would be witnessing bloodshed in Kabul.”

He also issued a rebuttal against his critics who said he left Afghanistan hastily, saying that, “those who think that I fled should not judge, if they don’t know all the details.”

Africa's COVID-19 cases surpass 7.38 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 7,388,784 as of Thursday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 186,367. Some 6,507,715 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease so far.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia and Ethiopia are among the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the agency.

Tunisia president sacks chiefs of security, national guard

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied yesterday appointed Sami Al-Hichri as director-general of National Security and Shukri Riahi as commander of the National Guard, as part of changes he has been making in leadership.

The appointments were announced in a brief statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic, after Saied received Reda Gharselawi, who is assigned with running the Ministry of the Interior, yesterday afternoon at the Carthage Palace, according to the official news agency TAP.

Erdogan backs peaceful resolution to Tigray conflict

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he backs a peaceful solution for the Tigray conflict and proposed he operate as mediator, news agencies reported following his meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed yesterday.

The conflict in the Ethiopian Tigray region has led to the death and displacement of tens of thousands and left millions hungry.

Egypt invites Israel PM for official visit to Cairo

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Head of Egypt's General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel yesterday invited Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to carry out an official visit to Cairo, media reports said.

In a meeting with Bennett, Kamel discussed the Egyptian efforts to advance the peace process and the procedures to maintain calm in all the Palestinian lands, an official Egyptian statement said, in addition to the latest developments in the relationship between Israel and Egypt.
