Israel PM: New lockdowns leave us no funds for military protection

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett yesterday ruled out the possibility of imposing a lockdown to limit the spread of the coronavirus as serious infection cases in the country hit a five-month high record.

"A lockdown is the easiest step for the government. Lots of people say, 'press on the lockdown button'… and everything is in order, except for one thing. In doing so we are destroying the future of the country," Bennett said during a televised press conference.

UAE receives ex-Afghan President Ghani, family out of humanitarian concerns — ministry

CAIRO, August 18. /TASS/: The UAE has granted asylum to former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his family who fled Afghanistan earlier, the national WAM news agency reported, citing the UAE Foreign Ministry.

"The UAE received President Ashraf Ghani and his family in the country out of humanitarian concerns," the statement reads.

Tunisia: Saied rejects dialogue and rules out alternative road map

18 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied declared on Monday that he rejects dialogue and vowed not to back down in the political crisis gripping his country, Arabi21 has reported.

"The road map is the one drawn by the Tunisian people, and I will not back down," he insisted. "Whoever imagines or makes himself believe that I will back down is deluded. Let them go away with their alternative road map and the dialogue that they think they can hold."

Iran: US ouster from Afghanistan 'humiliating'

18 Aug 2021; MEMO: Iran's top security official has said the departure of US forces from Afghanistan is "humiliating", days after the Taliban took over the neighbouring country.

"The end of any occupation is a humiliating dismissal," Ali Shamkhani, who heads the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, said today.

Tunisia: Ennahda MP appeals against president's decision to suspend parliament

18 Aug 2021; MEMO: Ennahda Member of Parliament, Farida Al-Obeidi has submitted two petitions to the Administrative Court in order to override the president's decision to suspend parliament.

The MP said yesterday that the first petition aims to override Presidential Order No. 80 related to suspending the powers of Parliament, and that the second relates to stopping the implementation of the order.

Israel: Gantz thanks Palestinian firefighters, but cancels permit for new homes

18 Aug 2021; MEMO: Israel's Defence Minister, Benny Gantz, thanked the Palestinian Authority on Tuesday for sending firefighters to help their Israeli counterparts to tackle the wildfires around Jerusalem, but also cancelled a meeting set to approve the permit for new Palestinian homes to be built in Area C of the occupied West Bank.

The PA sent four fire trucks and 20 firefighters to help Israel to deal with the massive fires, which are getting closer to residential areas. The order was given by PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

Qatar, Germany Call For Peaceful Power Transition In Afghanistan

DOHA, Aug 18 (NNN-QNA) – Qatar and Germany, yesterday, called for stepping up necessary efforts, to achieve national reconciliation and peaceful power transition in Afghanistan.

The two sides issued the call, during a phone talk between Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the Emir’s office said.

The Qatari Emir stressed the importance of continuing peace talks and efforts to achieve reconciliation and a peaceful power transition in Afghanistan, it said.
