EU threatens Lebanese politicians with sanctions over crisis

BEIRUT (AP) — The European Union’s foreign policy chief Saturday berated Lebanese politicians for delays in forming a new Cabinet, warning the union could impose sanctions on those behind the political stalemate in the crisis-hit country.

Josep Borrell made his comments at the presidential palace near the capital Beirut after meeting with President Michel Aoun. It was the first meeting in a two-day visit to Lebanon.

Iran moderate candidate concedes win by judiciary chief

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The moderate candidate in Iran’s presidential election has conceded he lost to the country’s hard-line judiciary chief.

Former Central Bank chief Abdolnasser Hemmati wrote on Instagram to judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi early Saturday.

Hemmati wrote: “I hope your administration provides causes for pride for the Islamic Republic of Iran, improves the economy and life with comfort and welfare for the great nation of Iran.”

Israel To Sell Germany 69 Radar Systems In 36-Million-Euro Deal

JERUSALEM, Jun 18 (NNN-PNN) – The state-owned company, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), yesterday announced, it will manufacture and deliver 69 tactical mobile radar systems to the German Land Forces, in a deal valued at 36 million euros.

The systems are IAI’s WatchGuard, the fifth generation of motion-detection tactical ground surveillance radars. Employing both staring and electronic-steering search techniques, the systems are expected to replace the aging legacy systems, in the German army, IAI said.

Israel: Palestinian citizens condemn arrest of senior Imam

18 June 2021; MEMO: The High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel (HFC) has condemned the arrest of the Imam of the Grand Omari Mosque in the city of Lod at dawn on Thursday. Sheikh Yousef Al-Baz's arrest, said the committee, is part of "an organised campaign targeting political and leadership figures."

UAE delivers 60,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to Yemen's strategic island: gov't source

ADEN, Yemen, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday dispatched a plane carrying a shipment of 60,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to war-ravaged Yemen, a government official told Xinhua.

The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), the UAE's humanitarian arm, delivered the first medical aid shipment to Yemen's strategic Island of Socotra in a bid to support the local authorities' efforts to combat the pandemic, the government source said on condition of anonymity.

Haftar sends reinforcements to south Libya

18 June 2021; MEMO: Commander of the Sabha military region in southern Libya, Ahmad Al-Utaybi, revealed that armed troops affiliated with the militias of retired General Khalifa Haftar arrived in the city of Sabha from the east.

Al-Utaybi said in a statement to Al-Quds Al-Arabi that they included hundreds of armed vehicles.

Tunisia to probe attempt to assassinate the president

18 June 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's Ministry of Justice yesterday announced that it was opening an investigation into the attempted assassination of President Kais Saied.

"The Minister of Justice authorized the Public Prosecution, represented by the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Tunis, to conduct the necessary inquiries and investigations into the circulated news about an attempt to assassinate the President of the Republic," a ministry statement said.

Israel dismisses probes into 90% of anti-Arab religious hate crimes

17 June 2021; MEMO: Israel has reportedly closed nine out of ten investigations into anti-Arab religious hate crime cases between 2018 and 2020 on account of not being able to locate the perpetrators. The cases entailed the vandalising of at least ten mosques and churches in both the occupied West Bank and within Israel. A decision by the State Prosecutor's Office is yet to be made regarding the tenth case.
