Khamenei set to tighten grip in Iran vote as frustrations grow

(Reuters) --- Iranians elect a new president on Friday in a race dominated by hardline candidates close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with popular anger over economic hardship and curbs on freedoms set to keep many pro-reform Iranians at home.

The front-runner in a carefully vetted field is Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline judge seen by analysts and insiders as representing the security establishment at its most fearsome.

Palestine: Hamas military wing says prisoner file will 'shock' occupation authorities

15 June 2021; MEMO: The Deputy Commander of the military wing of Hamas, Marwan Issa, has said that the Palestinian prisoners' file will "shock" the occupation authorities and the resistance will surprise "enemies" as well as "friends". The official with Al Qassam Brigades made his comments in a documentary aired last week on Al Jazeera.

Netanyahu boycotts successor's inauguration

15 June 2021; MEMO: Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to attend the inauguration of his successor Naftali Bennett, Israeli media reported yesterday. Bennett's government won a narrow 60-59 vote of confidence in the Knesset on Sunday.

Likud leader Netanyahu is now the leader of the opposition in the parliament. The one-time mentor of Bennet is convinced that the new government will not last long. He has promised that he will be back in office "soon".

Israeli forces hold manoeuvres in Jordan Valley

14 June 2021; MEMO: Israeli occupation forces have launched a military exercise around Tayaseer, a village near the West Bank city of Tubas in the northern Jordan Valley, Wafa news agency has reported.

According to the head of Tayaseer Village Council, Wajeeh Dabk, large numbers of Israeli tanks and other military vehicles have been deployed around the village for the manoeuvres. Villagers were not warned about this in advance, he insisted.

Egypt upholds death penalty for 12 Brotherhood members

14 June 2021; MEMO: Egypt's court of appeal on Monday upheld the death penalty for 12 members of the Muslim Brotherhood convicted in the Rabaa sit-in case, according to state-run media, Anadolu Agency reported.

The court upheld the death penalty against Abdel-Rahman el-Bar, Mohamed el-Beltagy, Safwat Hegazy, Osama Yassin, Ahmed Aref, Ihab Wagdy, Muhammad Abd al-Hayy, Mustafa al-Farmawi, Ahmed Farouk, Haitham al-Arabi, Muhammad Zanati, and Abd al-Azim Ibrahim, Middle East News Agency reported.

25 Africa migrants drown off Yemen coast

15 June 2021; MEMO: Twenty-five African migrants have drowned and more than 150 others went missing yesterday when their boat capsized off the coast of southern Yemen, Anadolu reported.

The agency quoted Ali Youssef Al-Dabbash, a worker in the Kharaz camp for African refugees as saying that Yemeni fishermen have recovered the bodies of 25 African migrants off the coast of Ras Al-Ara and Al-Mudaraba district on the Red Sea, west of Lahj governorate.

No significant change following Algeria election: Observers

15 June 2021; MEMO: The preliminary results of the first parliamentary election held in Algeria after the popular protests indicate that voters have not really changed their convictions or favoured parties and therefore the elections will not bring meaningful change, observers have said.

UAE-backed Yemen leader says his troops at island air base

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A militia leader and nephew of Yemen’s late strongman president has acknowledged that his Emirati-backed troops are stationed on an island in a crucial maritime chokepoint where a mysterious air base is now under construction.

The comments by Tariq Saleh come as ship-tracking data show that at least two Emirati-owned vessels have traveled to Mayun Island since an Associated Press story in May highlighted the base’s construction.
