Egypt: former presidential candidate rearrested

16 June 2021; MEMO: A former presidential candidate in Egypt has been rearrested by public prosecutors, local media have confirmed. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh has been in pre-trial detention since 2018. He was due to be released on 18 February following the expiry of the term by which he could legally be held, but this too was "extended".

Covid-19: World Bank, AU join hands to deploy vaccines for 400 mln Africans

ADDIS ABABA, June 15 (NNN-Xinhua) — The World Bank (WB) and the African Union (AU)’s COVID-19 Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT) announced a decision to work together to deploy vaccines for 400 million Africans.

This came after the president of the World Bank, David Malpass, met with the AVATT to discuss ways to accelerate vaccine deployment to Africa, according to a joint statement by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Bodies of scores of migrants recovered after boat capsizes off Yemen

ADEN (Yemen), June 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The bodies of 25 migrants have been recovered off the coast of Yemen after their boat, reportedly carrying up to 200 people, capsized, a provincial official said.

“The boat overturned two days ago and was carrying between 160 and 200 people,” said Jalil Ahmed Ali from the Lahij provincial authority, citing information given by Yemeni smugglers.

The fate of the other people on board was unclear.

Lebanon, Netherlands Sign Agreement To Boost Business Ties

BEIRUT, Jun 16 (NNN-NNA) – Lebanon and the Netherlands signed yesterday, an agreement to boost ties between economic bodies and businessmen in the two countries.

The agreement was signed by Toufic Dabbousi, head of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Tripoli and North Lebanon, and Mohammad Sinno, president of the Lebanese Dutch Business Association.

Iraqi forces shoot down 2 drones in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi security forces shot down two unknown drones above two areas in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Iraqi military said on Wednesday.

One of the drones was carrying explosives and was shot down late on Tuesday night in an empty area near al-Rashid Camp district in southern Baghdad, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a brief statement issued shortly after midnight local time.

Reformist drops out of Iran election on last day of campaign

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The only reformist candidate in Iran’s upcoming presidential election dropped out of the race Wednesday on the last day of campaigning, state media reported, likely trying to boost the chances of a moderate candidate.

Mohsen Mehralizadeh, 64, resigned in a letter to Iran’s Interior Ministry, which runs elections in the Islamic Republic, the state-run IRNA news agency reported. Such dropouts are common in Iranian presidential elections in order to boost the chances of similar candidates.

Israeli airstrikes target Gaza sites, first since cease-fire

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli aircraft carried out a series of airstrikes at militant sites in the Gaza Strip early Wednesday, the first such raids since a shaky cease-fire ended the war with Hamas last month.

The airstrikes targeted facilities used by Hamas militants for meetings to plan attacks, the Israeli military said, blaming the group for any act of violence emanating from Gaza. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Tensions raised before Israeli nationalist march in East Jerusalem

(Reuters) --- Far-right Israeli groups plan to march in East Jerusalem on Tuesday in a flag-waving procession that risks reigniting tensions with Palestinians and poses an early test for Israel's new government.

Several hours before the event was due to start, incendiary balloons launched from Gaza caused several fires in fields in Israeli communities near the border with the Palestinian enclave, witnesses and the Israeli fire brigade said.
