Turkey says it will defeat 'sea snot' outbreak in Marmara Sea

07 June 2021; MEMO: Turkey's environment minister pledged on Sunday to defeat a plague of "sea snot" threatening the Sea of Marmara with a disaster management plan he said would secure its future, reports Reuters.

A thick slimy layer of organic matter, known as marine mucilage, has spread through the sea south of Istanbul, posing a threat to marine life and the fishing industry.

Pair of Jerusalem activists freed after detention by Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police on Sunday detained two members of a prominent family in the contested Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem who led protests against attempts by Jewish settlers to evict dozens of Palestinian families from their homes in the area. The twin brother and sister were released later in the day.

One Turkish Soldier Killed, Another Injured In Northern Syria

ANKARA, Jun 5 (NNN-ANADOLU) – A Turkish soldier was killed and another was injured, in a rocket attack by “terrorists” in northern Syria, Turkey’s defence ministry said yesterday.

The attack happened in the Operation Olive Branch region, on Thursday, the ministry said in a statement.

The region is neighbouring the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). The Turkish army and the YPG members often clash in the region, as Turkey sees the group as the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Egypt, France Hold Joint Naval Drills In Mediterranean Sea

CAIRO, Jun 6 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian and French naval forces carried out joint military drills in the Mediterranean Sea, with the participation of two frigates, one from each country, said the Egyptian army in a statement yesterday.

The training included the implementation of an air defence exercise, tactical exercises and electronic warfare exercises, it added.

The drills also included “training on maritime security operations that aim at locating surface and air threats.”

Morocco, U.S. To Hold Annual Military Drills

RABAT, Jun 6 (NNN-MAP) – Morocco and the United States will hold a joint military drill, with the participation of other foreign troops, from tomorrow, June 7-18, in several regions in Morocco.

The 17th edition of the annual military exercises named “African Lion” will be joined by troops from Britain, Brazil, Canada, Tunisia, Senegal, the Netherlands, and Italy, and observers from 30 countries, according to a statement reported yesterday by the General Staff of Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR).

Israeli police detain prominent Sheikh Jarrah activist

06 June 2021; MEMO: Israeli police detained a Palestinian activist in a raid on her home in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday, according to her family, reports Anadolu Agency.

Local residents said police raided the home of Muna al-Kurd, 23, and took her to an unknown destination.

Her father, Nabil al-Kurd, confirmed his daughter's detention by Israeli forces.
