Hamas to US: Israel has to end its occupation of Palestine

09 June 2021; MEMO: Hamas yesterday condemned the latest remarks made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in which he endorsed the Israeli occupation's "right to defend itself".

"Blinken gives the Israeli occupation a greenlight to continue its aggression on the Palestinian people," Hamas said in a statement.

Iraq’s Intelligence Officer Assassinated In Baghdad: Source

BAGHDAD, Jun 8 (NNN-NINA) – Unidentified gunmen yesterday killed a senior officer of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS), in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a security source said.

Nibras Farman, an INIS officer, was shot dead when gunmen opened fire on him, with their silenced weapons, in front of his house, in al-Baladiyat neighbourhood, in eastern Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said, on condition of anonymity.

The source also said that the security forces launched an investigation into the incident.

Hamas chief in Egypt for talks ahead of planned meeting of Palestinian factions

(Reuters) --- Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Cairo on Tuesday for the first in a series of talks this week between Egyptian authorities and Palestinian factions that aims to reinforce a ceasefire with Israel, Palestinian and Egyptian sources said.

Haniyeh's visit came in response to a special invitation from Cairo, in advance of a broader meeting of Palestinian factions that could begin as early as next week, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem told Reuters.

Israel: Netanyahu faces end of rule in parliamentary vote on new government

(Reuters) --- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces an end to his long hold on power in Israel on Sunday when the country's legislature votes on approving an improbable government of diverse parties that came together to unseat him.

"It's happening!" opposition leader Yair Lapid of the centrist Yesh Atid party wrote on Twitter on Tuesday after parliament's speaker announced the June 13 special session.

Africa's COVID-19 cases surpass 4.92 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 4,928,685 as of Monday evening, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 132,517 while 4,447,383 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.
