Israel detains deputy head of Islamic Movement in Israel

15 May 2021; MEMO: Israeli police detained the deputy head of the Islamic movement in Israel, Sheikh Kamal al-Khatib, on Friday after breaking into his home in Kafr Kanna in Galilee, northern Israel.

His son told Al Jazeera television that police violently raided the home and assaulted family members.

Clashes erupted between residents and police that left nine Israeli Arabs injured, following the arrest.

Egyptian, Jordanian FMs discuss worsening Israeli-Palestinian conflict

CAIRO, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi discussed on Friday the deteriorating conflict in the Palestinian territories, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

During a phone conversation, both ministers stressed the importance of continuing the work on an immediate means to stop the conflict in the Gaza Strip and prevent any Israeli provocations in Jerusalem, the ministry said in a statement.

Africa's COVID-19 cases pass 4.67 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,677,798 as of Saturday noon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 125,890 while 4,232,974 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

Israeli military accused of using media to trick Hamas

JERUSALEM (AP) — Early Friday, just after midnight, the Israeli military put out an ominous statement to the media: “IDF air and ground troops are currently attacking in the Gaza Strip.”

The vaguely worded statement set off frenzied speculation that Israel had launched a ground invasion of Gaza — a much-feared scenario that would mark a bloody escalation of this week’s operation against Hamas militants. Some reporters were even told outright the incursion had begun.

Hamas rockets target airport, some airlines canceled flights to Israel

14 May 2021; MEMO: The armed wing of Palestinian resistance group Hamas fired rockets against an airport and major cities in Israel, including Tel Aviv, the group said on Thursday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Al-Qassam Brigades group said in a statement that it had launched 250 Ayyash missiles towards Ramon Airport in southern Israel, about 220 kilometers (137 miles) from Gaza.
