Iran blames US navy for 'warning shots' fired in Strait of Hormuz

12 May 2021; MEMO: Iran's Revolutionary Guards yesterday held the US Navy responsible for the warning shots fired against Iranian military boats in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards accused US naval ships of "unprofessional behaviour such as flying helicopters, firing flares and aimless and provocative shooting".

Israel targets residential buildings, leaving Gazans homeless

12 May 2021; MEMO: Israeli occupation warplanes targeted residential buildings in Gaza last night, leaving Palestinians homeless.

A 13-storey residential tower in western Gaza City collapsed after Israeli airstrikes targeted the building. There were no reports of casualties among the residents, who reportedly vacated the Hanadi tower before it was hit.

Muslims, Christians defend Jerusalem together: Archbishop Atallah Hanna

12 May 2021; MEMO: Head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem Archbishop Atallah Hanna hailed on Tuesday the victory of Palestinians in the battle to defend Jerusalem and the holy sites, Rai al Youm reported.

"During a tour around and inside Al Aqsa Mosque we met champions who do not accept to surrender to the status quo," he said.

He added: "These heroes insist on facing off the Zionist project and the dark occupation policies which are targeting them – Muslims and Christians."

Hamas: No halt to firing rockets if Israel continues to commit crimes against Palestinians

12 May 2021; MEMO: If Israel continues to perpetrate crimes and violations against the Palestinian people, the Palestinian resistance groups, including Hamas, will respond and defend Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Gaza Strip, Hamas Spokesman Fawzi Barhoum has said.

The Palestinian people will "change the rules of engagement already imposed by the resistance in response to Israeli crimes and violations," he said in a statement.

Netanyahu vows to retaliate against Gaza rocket attacks on Israel

JERUSALEM, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the militant groups in Gaza Strip that they will "pay a heavy price" for Tuesday night's rocket attacks on central and southern Israel.

Rocket barrages fired at Tel Aviv and other major cities in central Israel left a woman killed and dozens of people wounded, according to Israel's Magen David Adom emergency health service.

Ethiopian police arrest 9 over suspected terror plot

ADDIS ABABA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Police in Ethiopia's eastern Somali regional state have arrested nine individuals accused of planning terror attacks, an Ethiopian official said on Wednesday.

Ali Hassen, deputy chief commissioner of the Somali region Police Commission, said the nine suspects are accused of plotting terror attacks on various religious sites in the region to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fatir, which will be celebrated this year on Thursday, Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) reported.

"Emergency state" announced in Israeli city amid Arab-Jewish clashes

JERUSALEM, May 11 (Xinhua) -- A state of emergency was announced on Tuesday night in a central Israeli city and Border Police forces were sent there as Arabs and Jews have been clashing in fresh street violence, Israeli authorities said.

The rare move followed an emergency consultation with senior security officials after days of violence in Lod, an Arab-Jewish city east of Tel Aviv, said Prime Minister's Office in a statement.

Turkey: Erdogan, Putin discuss Israeli attacks against Palestinians

ISTANBUL, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin discussed Israeli attacks against the Palestinians during a phone conversation, Turkey's presidential office said in a statement Wednesday.

Erdogan said the international community should teach Israel a "strong and deterrent" lesson to stop its "reckless attacks" on Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Palestinians.

He also noted it is important for the UN Security Council to intervene in before the crisis further worsens.

Iran state TV says Ahmadinejad will run in presidential race

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s state television reported Wednesday that the country’s former firebrand president will run again for office in upcoming elections in June.

Broadcast footage showed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad marching accompanied by supporters to a registration center at the Interior Ministry where he filled out registration forms.

Ahmadinejad in recent years has tried to polish his hardline image into a more centrist candidacy, criticizing the government for mismanagement.

Israel, Hamas escalate heavy fighting with no end in sight

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel stepped up its attacks on the Gaza Strip, flattening a high-rise building used by the Hamas militant group and killing at least three militants in their hideouts on Tuesday as Palestinian rockets rained down almost nonstop on parts of Israel.

It was the heaviest fighting between the bitter enemies since 2014, and it showed no signs of slowing.
