Algeria calls on France to compensate 7,300 victims of colonial-era mines

06 Apr 2021; MEMO: France must compensate the victims of landmines planted by its forces during the colonial era, head of the Algerian National Human Rights Council (CNHD), Bouzid Lazhari, has said, adding that French authorities laid more than nine million mines along Algeria's eastern and western borders, which caused permanent disabilities for 7,300 Algerians.

Turkey summons Chinese envoy over embassy's remarks

06 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned the Chinese ambassador to Ankara over the Chinese Embassy's social media posts that caused a discomfort, Anadolu Agency reported.

The discomfort caused by the embassy's Twitter posts were conveyed to Chinese Ambassador Liu Shaobin, said an official on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Iran cargo ship attacked in Red Sea

06 Apr 2021; MEMO: An Iranian cargo ship has come under attack in the Red Sea, Reuters reported Al Arabiya TV as saying on Tuesday, quoting unnamed sources.

It cited the sources as saying the vessel was attacked off the coast of Eritrea and was affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guards but provided no evidence to support the assertion.

Reuters could not independently verify the report.

Morocco FM reiterates call on Algeria to join dialogue on Sahara region

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, has reiterated his country's call on Algeria to sit at the negotiating table over the Western Sahara region.

Bourita made the remarks during a joint press conference with his Senegalese counterpart, Aïssata Tall Sall, on the occasion of opening a consulate general for Senegal in Dakhla.

Iran indicts 10 officials over military shoot down of Ukrainian plane

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: Iran's outgoing military prosecutor, Gholamabbas Torki, said Tuesday that 10 officials have been indicted over the 2020 military shootdown of a Ukrainian passenger plane that killed all 176 passengers on board.

"The indictment of the case of the Ukrainian plane was also issued and a serious and accurate investigation was carried out and indictments were issued for 10 people who were at fault," Torki told reporters as he handed over his duties to his successor Nasser Seraj.

Israel: Settler kills 73-year-old Palestinian woman

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: An elderly Palestinian woman died this morning after she succumbed to injuries she sustained when an Israeli settler rammed his car into her on a road in southern Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

According to local sources, a settler driving at high speed ran over 73-year-old Shafiqa Mohamed Abu Aqeel leaving her with serious injuries.

The victim was rushed to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba where she was pronounced dead.

Syria: Fuel crisis worsening in regime areas

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: Syria's fuel crisis has deepened in the areas under the regime's control resulting in long queues of vehicles at petrol stations.

Local media yesterday quoted sources as saying the halt of fuel supply from the areas controlled by the Kurdish Peoples' Protection Unit (YPG) to the Syrian regime-controlled areas had "deepened the country's fuel crisis."

Tunisian president rejects parliament bid to amend approval of Constitutional Court

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's President Kais Saied said on Tuesday that he had rejected parliament's attempt to reduce the number of votes needed to approve the formation of a constitutional court, Anadolu reported.

Saied claimed that such amendments were merely introduced in a bid to settle scores, while Al Sharq Al Awsat newspaper said that Saied was afraid that the new amendments were targeting him and give the parliament more power to be able to oust the president.

'No elections without Jerusalem': Hamas

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: Hamas on Monday stressed it would not accept holding Palestinian parliamentary election without the participation of Palestinians in Jerusalem.

In a statement, member of the movement's political bureau Ezzat Al-Reshq said: "We insist that the Palestinian people in Jerusalem have the right to participate in the coming elections, as candidates and as voters, exactly as in 2006."
