Israel looks to delay ICC probes into its crimes

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: Israeli officials are carrying out contacts with senior officials at the International Criminal Court (ICC) seeking to persuade them to put off starting investigations into Israeli war crimes in Gaza, West Bank, and Jerusalem.

Kuwait's Al Mujtama magazine reported Israeli army radio saying that the occupation state is seeking the postponement until the start of new ICC prosecutor Karim Khan's term.

Israel defies Biden, builds new settlement units in Jerusalem

07 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Israeli planning and building committee in Jerusalem is to discuss plans for further construction beyond occupied Jerusalem, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed on Tuesday.

This is, according to Haaretz, the first time that a settlement plan is being proposed and discussed since the start of the tenure of US President Joe Biden.

EU chiefs in rare Turkey visit to revamp relations

ANKARA, April 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The European Union’s top two officials will pay a rare visit on Tuesday to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed at testing his avowed commitment to improve uneasy ties.

Years of disagreements over a growing list of issues threatened to boil over last summer when Turkey sent navy ships to support an energy exploration mission in waters claimed by EU members Cyprus and Greece.

Tensions cooled somewhat when Turkey withdrew the vessels and this year engaged in its first maritime talks with Greece since 2016.

Egypt: Suez Canal may expand southern channel, chairman says

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - The Suez Canal Authority is considering expanding the southern section of the waterway where the container ship Ever Given became stranded, its chairman said on Tuesday.

It is also looking into procuring cranes that could potentially offload cargo at heights of up to 250 metres (820 ft), Osama Rabie told Reuters in an interview.

“Our procedures are sound, we are just aiming to improve the service,” he said.

Egypt says dam talks with Ethiopia and Sudan made no progress

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the latest round of talks on the Ethiopian Renaissance dam with Ethiopia and Sudan in Kinshasa over April 4-5 made no progress.

Delegations from the three countries were meeting in the Democratic Republic of Congo hoping to break the deadlock in negotiations over a project Ethiopia says is key to its economic development and power generation.

Egypt fears the dam will imperil its supplies of Nile water, while Sudan is concerned about the dam’s safety and water flows through its own dams and water stations.

Tunisian president, Arab League chief discuss Arab development

TUNIS, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Kais Saied received Monday the visiting Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit.

According to the presidency, the two officials reviewed the activities of the general secretariat of the League of Arab States and discussed the latest developments in the region.

"Saied stressed the need to adopt a new approach in the service of joint Arab action, while calling for reviewing regulations, developing specialized Arab structures and organizations and making their work more effective," reads the presidency statement.

Oman to ban entry of visitors from April 8 following increase in COVID cases

05 Apr 2021; MEMO: Oman will only allow citizens and residents to enter the Gulf Arab state from April 8 following an increase in COVID-19 cases that is pressuring the health care system, the country's coronavirus committee said on Monday, Reuters reports.

The committee also extended an evening ban on all commercial activities until the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which is due to start in mid-April this year, according to a statement on state media.

Iran calls for Saudi Arabia to engage in direct talks

06 Apr 2021; MEMO: Iran has called for Saudi Arabia to engage in direct talks to solve ongoing issues between the two countries without the involvement of a third party, Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said yesterday.

According to Iran's FarsNews Agency, Khatibzadeh said: "I regret that Riyadh has not yet developed the courage to have dialogue outside the domain of the trans-regional powers. Riyadh still looks to other capitals outside the region."
