Turkey coast guard rescues 13 asylum seekers

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 13 asylum seekers stranded on a rubber boat off the country's southwestern coast on Thursday, Anadolu Agency reports.

According to the Coast Guard Command, the group of asylum seekers asked for help when their boat drifted as its engine broke down off the coast of Marmaris district in Mugla province.

Later, the asylum seekers were transferred to the provincial migration office.

Turkish firms offer trips to Russia for vaccination

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: Turkish tour firms have begun organising vaccination tours to Russia for those who do not want to wait to receive the inoculation, Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet reports.

According to the paper, tours include a visit to Moscow, accommodation, flights and the vaccination. A certificate is also given to those who received the inoculation

Turkey to convert crashed plane into traditional restaurant

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: Turkey will convert a forgotten plane which skidded off the runway into a restaurant in Trabzon, a city off the Black Sea.

Three years after the Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737 was buried in mud, just 25 metres away from the sea, on the side of a cliff, the plane will be converted into a pide – Turkish flatbread – restaurant.

Bahrain appoints first ever envoy to Israel

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: Bahrain has appointed its first ambassador to Israel and has set up its diplomatic mission there according to a royal decree issued on Tuesday.

The envoy was named as Khaled Yousif Al-Jalahma who formerly was director of operations at Bahrain's Foreign Ministry and was deputy chief of mission at Bahrain's Embassy in the US before that.

Egypt's Suez Canal says to seek over 1-bln-USD compensation for losses caused by stuck ship

CAIRO, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's Suez Canal Authority (SCA) will seek over 1 billion U.S. dollars in compensation for the losses caused by the container ship Ever Given that was stuck in the waterway and blocking navigation for six days, SCA chairman Osama Rabie has said.

The compensation for the losses and damages "will reach over 1 billion dollars," Rabie told a local TV channel on Wednesday. "This is the right of the state and we will not give it up."

Iraqi Parliament Approves 2021 Budget After Months Of Political Row

BAGHDAD, Apr 1 (NNN-NINA) – The Iraqi parliament yesterday endorsed a bill for the 2021 budget, with about 89 billion U.S. dollars, and a deficit of about 19 billion dollars, after months of delay due to political differences.

A statement by the media office of parliament said, 215 lawmakers attended a session chaired by Speaker, Mohammed al-Halbousi, and passed the budget for 2021.

Israel: Netanyahu may run for president to avoid prosecution

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering running for president to replace Reuven Rivlin, whose term ends in July, in order to avoid prosecution, Arab48 reported yesterday.

The Arabic news site reported Israeli website Wallah saying that Netanyahu's agreement to become president would end the deadlock of forming an Israeli government and prevent the country heading to a fifth election.

Libya: 80% of state institutions unified in less than a month

01 Apr 2021; MEMO: The prime minister of Libya's Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, has confirmed that 80 per cent of the country's institutions have been unified in less than a month. Dbeibeh revealed the latest situation in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
