Saudi Arabia seeks to overcome differences with other states

31 Mar 2021; MEMO: Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman called Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday to wish him a speedy recovery from Covid-19 and discuss mutual relations, the Saudi Press Agency has reported. Khan tested positive for the virus on 20 March and has been in self-isolation at home ever since.

Palestine: PLO says no to elections without Jerusalem

Ahmed Majdalani said that it is impossible to hold elections without Jerusalemites' involvement.

Egypt: Investigation begins into how ship got stuck on Suez Canal

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Formal investigations into how the giant container ship Ever Given ran aground in the Suez Canal, shutting down shipping in the major global waterway for almost a week, begin on Wednesday, a canal official told Reuters.

Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie has suggested weather conditions, including high winds, and human error could have played a role in the grounding on March 23.

Syria: Assad says traders profiting from currency crash will be punished

30 Mar 2021; MEMO: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Tuesday that traders profiting from the collapse of the Syrian pound, which hit an all-time low this month, would be punished.

The fall of the currency, which has rebounded somewhat since hitting 4,000 to the US dollar, has driven up inflation. Syrians have struggled to afford food and power.

Hamas insists on rebuilding PLO and liberating Palestinian prisoners

31 Mar 2021; MEMO: Head of Hamas' political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, said on Tuesday that his movement insists on rebuilding the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

During a speech he delivered to the Second International Student Conference, Haniyeh said: "We believe that internal division is abnormal in the context of the Palestinian history." He stressed that his movement is serious about implementing the recommendations of the Cairo dialogue between the various factions.

Egypt: Sisi warns of regional instability over Renaissance Dam crisis

31 Mar 2021; MEMO: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has warned that it will not allow any other country to undermine its water supply and if it does, there will be severe regional consequences.

"I'm not threatening anyone here, our dialogue is always reasonable and rational," Al-Sisi said on Tuesday at a press conference in Ismailia to mark the freeing of the Ever Given container ship.

Egypt's Sisi says ship's stranding showed importance of Suez Canal

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Tuesday that the grounding of a huge container ship in the Suez Canal had reaffirmed the importance of the waterway.

“We didn’t hope for something like this, but fate was doing its work. It showed and reaffirmed the reality and importance” of the canal, Sisi said as he greeted staff on a visit to the Suez Canal Authority in Ismailia.
