Saudi official said to have threatened UN investigator is named

26 Mar 2021; MEMO: The Saudi official alleged to have issued death threats against UN investigator Agnès Callamard has been named as the Kingdom's very own human rights chief Awwad Al-Awwad. The threats are said to have been made while Callamard was investigating the 2018 murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Egypt: 2 trains collide, at least 32 dead

26 Mar 2021; MEMO: Two trains collided in Egypt today causing 32 deaths and dozens of casualties after emergency brakes were triggered by "unknown individuals" near the city of Sohag, Reuters reported the railway authority saying.

The brakes caused one of the trains to stop and the other to crash into it from behind, and the authority is conducting further investigations, it said.

The Ministry of Health said at least 32 people were killed and 66 injured as a result of the crash.

Egypt: Plan made to refloat ship blocking Suez Canal using tide

SUEZ, Egypt (AP) — The company that owns the giant container ship stuck sideways across the Suez Canal said an attempt will be made to refloat the vessel by taking advantage of tidal movements later Saturday.

The Ever Given, owned by Japanese firm Shoei Kisen KK, got wedged Tuesday in a single-lane stretch of the canal, about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) north of the southern entrance, near the city of Suez.

Counting Continues In Israel’s Fourth Election In Two Years Amid Political Deadlock

JERUSALEM, Mar 26 (NNN-MA’AN) – Counting of the votes, in Israel’s parliamentary elections continued yesterday, as the fourth election in two years has emerged as yet another political stalemate.

With nearly 90 percent of the votes counted, Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc was projected to win 52 seats — nine seats short of the threshold needed, for a majority in the 120-seat parliament, according to figures issued by the Central Elections Committee, which oversees the elections.

32 dead, 66 injured after passenger trains collide in Egypt

CAIRO, March 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 32 people died and 66 others were injured after two passenger trains collided in Egypt on Friday, the health ministry said.

A statement said dozens of ambulances rushed to the scene in the Tahta district of Sohag province, about 460km south of the capital Cairo.

“32 people were killed and 66 injured” and transported to hospital, the statement said.

Video footage showed several carriages overturned.

Pictures on local media showed train carriages derailed above a channel of water.

Yemen's Houthis warn of stronger attacks after drone strikes on Saudi Arabia

DUBAI (Reuters) - Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said on Friday they had attacked Saudi energy and military sites with 18 armed drones, and the kingdom’s energy ministry reported that a projectile had struck a petroleum products distribution station, causing a fire.

The Saudi-led military coalition which is at war with the Houthis said late on Thursday it had intercepted several drones aimed at Saudi Arabia. The attacks came days after Riyadh presented a peace initiative that includes a nationwide truce in Yemen as the war enters its seventh year.

Italian, French, German FMs visit Libya, meet new Libyan PM

TRIPOLI, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Thursday visited Libya's capital Tripoli and met with its new Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

The meeting discussed the return of European countries and flights to Libya, strengthening European diplomatic presence in Tripoli, and addressing illegal immigration, according to a statement issued by the information office of the Libyan Government of National Unity.

Egypt losing $400 million/hour due to wedged ship in Suez Canal

25 Mar 2021; MEMO: According to a financial estimate issued by a prominent banking institution, the losses incurred by Egypt after the Suez Canal was blocked by the Ever Given cargo ship are estimated at about $400 million per hour.

According to Lloyd's List calculations, westbound traffic is worth about $5.1 billion per day and eastbound traffic roughly $4.5 billion.

According to navigation data collected by Bloomberg, 185 vessels are currently waiting to cross the canal.

Israel's Likud divided need for Arab party in government coalition

26 Mar 2021; MEMO: A state of deep division has prevailed among members of Israel's Likud party, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, over the need to ask Arab parties to join the next coalition government, Haaretz reported.

The paper said the party's members have engaged in a heated debate on WhatsApp, where a clear majority of its members and Knesset lawmakers strongly opposed the idea.
