Turkish forces kill 8 YPG members in northern Syria: ministry

ANKARA, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Turkish forces killed eight members of the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria after they opened fire on Turkey's troops in the region, Turkey's Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

Turkish commandos immediately retaliated and killed eight YPG fighters after the group opened fire on Turkish troops positioned in the Operation Peace Spring zone, the ministry tweeted.

Turkish police detain politician staging parliament sit-in

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish police have detained a prominent pro-Kurdish party politician who was staging a days-long protest in parliament.

Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu, from the Peoples’ Democratic Party, or HDP, refused to leave parliament after he was stripped of his status and immunity as lawmaker on Wednesday. The party said around 100 police officers entered parliament to detain him Sunday. Video of his detention showed police officers dragging him away.

Palestinian Killed By Israeli Troops During Clashes: Witness

NABLUS, Mar 20 (NNN-WAFA) – A Palestinian man was killed yesterday, when the Israeli army used live and rubber bullets, to disperse a weekly protest against settlements, in the northern West Bank.

Clashes erupted between Palestinian protesters and Israeli soldiers, in the town of Beit Dajan in the eastern Nablus province, after the forces fired live and rubber bullets, as well as, tear gas canisters at them.

An Anadolu Agency correspondent said, the man was hit in the face.

Palestinians take another step in preparations for first election in 15 years

GAZA/RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinians took another step in preparations for their first parliamentary election in 15 years on Saturday, opening registration offices to admit the political parties and independent candidates that will take part.

The May 22 election in the West Bank and Gaza is part of a broader push for reconciliation between President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction and rival Islamist group Hamas. This is seen as vital to building broader support for any future statehood talks with Israel, frozen since 2014.

Supreme leader ushers in Iranian new year with message of hope

(Reuters) - Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei named the Iranian new year that of “production, support and removal of barriers” in a live televised speech broadcast on Saturday.

“There is good ground for a production leap,” Khamenei said, adding that the government needed to get rid of any legal obstacles to production and growth.

The Iranian army fired gun salutes at Tehran’s Azadi Square to usher in Nowruz - or “New Day” in Persian - at 13.07 local time.

Turkey's Erdogan quits European treaty on violence against women

ANKARA (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan pulled Turkey out of an international accord designed to protect women, ministers and an official notice said on Saturday, prompting criticism from those who said it was necessary to address rising domestic violence.

The Council of Europe accord, called the Istanbul Convention, pledged to prevent, prosecute and eliminate domestic violence and promote equality. Turkey signed it in 2011 but femicide has surged in the country in recent years.

Lebanon: Hezbollah chief will support new cabinet if announced Monday

20 Mar 2021; MEMO: Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Thursday he would support a new Lebanese cabinet if one is announced on Monday, but said that a government formed solely of specialists would not last, reported Reuters.

President Michel Aoun is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri next week.

The two politicians have been wrangling for months as the country sinks deeper into financial crisis.
