China decries Japanese defense minister's visit to Yasukuni Shrine

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense on Friday expressed strong opposition to the Japanese defense minister's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, and lodged solemn representations with the Japanese side.

Wu Qian, the ministry's spokesperson, made the remarks when commenting on Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi's visit to the shrine on Aug. 13.

China provided about 800 mln doses of COVID-19 vaccines to world: Vice FM

BEIJING, Aug 13 (APP): China has provided the world with about 800 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to help people cope with the pandemic, especially those in developing countries, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said on Friday.

China is fulfilling its commitment to make vaccines a global public good with practical actions, he said while briefing more than 160 representatives and ambassadors from international organizations and embassies.

Thai protesters spar with police in march on PM's residence

BANGKOK, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Thai police clashed with demonstrators on Friday after hundreds defied a ban on gatherings to rally in central Bangkok, where they attempted to march on the prime minister's residence to demand his resignation over the country's coronavirus crisis.

Police fired tear gas canisters and rubber bullets from an elevated highway in response to demonstrators who tried to pull down containers that were being used as roadblocks, in a third day of confrontation this week.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Friday expressed resolute opposition to any kind of agreement signed between the United States and Taiwan that carries sovereign implications or any type of related activities.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to a media inquiry regarding a recent meeting convened by the United States and Taiwan following a so-called memorandum on maritime patrol cooperation signed in March.

World stocks up with eye on economic releases

SINGAPORE (AP) — World stocks mostly rose Friday ahead of more economic releases that could hint at how the delta variant is affecting growth.

France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.2% to 6,895.50, while the DAX in Germany added 0.3% to 15,985.45. Britain’s FTSE 100 picked up 0.4% to 7,223.49 in early trading.

Wall Street was set for a muted open. Futures for the broad S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1%, to 4,457.50 and 35,437.00 respectively. Both indices had closed at record highs for the third-straight day on Thursday.

Malaysian police: Air force officer kills 3 colleagues, self

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A Malaysian air force officer went on a shooting rampage Friday, killing three colleagues before turning the gun on himself, officials said.

Police in eastern Sarawak state on Borneo island said the shootings occurred at a security post on an air force base in the state, and that they were still investigating the motive.

Sarawak deputy police commissioner Mancha Anak Ata said an initial investigation showed the gunman had snatched firearms from the security post before going on a rampage.

N.Korean envoy calls for cooperation with Russia to counter United States

SEOUL, Aug 12 (Reuters) - North Korea intends to strengthen cooperation with Russia to counter the United States, and peace on the Korean peninsula will not be possible until American troops are withdrawn, Pyongyang's ambassador to Russia told TASS news agency.

Ambassador Sin Hong-chol's comments come after senior North Korean leaders warned this week that South Korea and the United States would face repercussions for their decision to go ahead with annual joint military drills.
