Asian shares mixed after S&P 500 sets fresh record high

(AP) --- Asian shares advanced Wednesday after Wall Street kicked off December with more milestones, as a broad rally pushed the S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite to new highs.

Australia reported its economy expanded 3.3% in the July-September quarter as the country recovered from pandemic lockdowns. That lifted the country out of recession, although in annual terms the economy contracted 3.8% from a year earlier.

Azerbaijani troops enter Lachin district in Nagorno-Karabakh

BAKU, December 1. /TASS/: Units of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces have entered the Lachin district in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry’s press service informed.

"In accordance with the trilateral statement signed by presidents of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Russian Federation and the prime minister of the Republic of Armenia, units of the Azerbaijani army entered the Lachin district on December 1 (in the early hours of December 1 Azerbaijani time - TASS)," the message informed.

Myanmar Military Extends Non-Operation Period Against Armed Groups For One More Month

YANGON, Dec 1 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar military announced today, the extension of the suspension period of its operation against armed groups, to the end of Dec.

The Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services, issued a statement that the suspension of military activities, which expired yesterday, will be further extended to Dec 31.

The statement said, the extension aims to carry out effective prevention, control and treatment measures against COVID-19, and to implement eternal peace.

Japan to keep funding domestic tourism campaign under new stimulus package - draft

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese government plans to keep setting aside money to promote domestic tourism and dining out in its next stimulus package, according to a draft of the upcoming package seen by Reuters, even as rising COVID-19 infections have prompted concern about the campaigns.

The draft stimulus package also included a plan to set up a fund to encourage investment in green technology.

China gave COVID-19 vaccine candidate to North Korea's Kim: U.S. analyst

SEOUL (Reuters) - China has provided North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his family with an experimental coronavirus vaccine, a U.S. analyst said on Tuesday, citing two unidentified Japanese intelligence sources.

Harry Kazianis, a North Korea expert at the Center for the National Interest think tank in Washington, said the Kims and several senior North Korean officials had been vaccinated.

It was unclear which company had supplied its drug candidate to the Kims and whether it had proven to be safe, he added.

Papuans rally for independence from Indonesia as group declares government in exile

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Hundreds of Papuans held rallies across at least eight cities in Indonesia on Tuesday to renew calls for independence, as a separatist group declared it had established a provisional government in exile.

The demonstrations marked the anniversary of West Papua declaring independence from Dutch rule in 1961, which was followed by a contentious U.N.-sanctioned referendum in 1969 that brought Papua under Indonesian control.

Among more than 100 students who marched in the capital Jakarta, Papuan Roland Levy said the date remained significant decades on.

China urges U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan: spokesperson

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday reiterated its firm opposition to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urging the United States to handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly and avoid "treading further down the wrong and dangerous path."

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily press briefing when commenting on the arms sales.

"China stands firmly opposed to the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan," Hua said, adding that this position is clear and consistent.

Australian gov't should apologize to Afghan people: Chinese FM spokesperson

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Australian government should formally apologize to the Afghan people for the violent crimes committed against the civilians, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

It should make a solemn promise to the international community that such atrocities will never happen again, spokesperson Hua Chunying told a regular press briefing.

China sanctions four with U.S. links over "vicious" Hong Kong actions

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China has decided to impose sanctions on four people with U.S. institutional links who have acted viciously on issues related to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), a foreign ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks in response to the U.S. State Department and Treasury Department's announcement on Nov. 9 that sanctions were being imposed on four Chinese officials from China's central government and the HKSAR government.

Vietnam reports 1st local infection in 89 days

Hanoi, Dec 1 (AP-PTI) Vietnamese authorities are conducting intensive contact tracing after discovering the country's first confirmed local transmission of the coronavirus in 89 days.

State media said Tuesday that a 32-year-old man in Ho Chi Minh City tested positive for the coronavirus on Monday after visiting a flight attendant who was undergoing self-quarantine at his home following his return from Japan two weeks ago.
