JAPAN: Olympic rings back in Tokyo Bay; a sign of hope in pandemic

TOKYO (AP) — The five Olympic rings are back in Tokyo Bay.

They were removed for maintenance four months ago shortly after the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rings arrived on Tuesday after a short cruise from nearby Yokohama and are positioned on a barge in the shadow on Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge.

The rings — painted blue, black, red, green, and yellow — are gigantic. They stand about 15 meters tall and 33 meters in length — about 50 feet tall and 100 feet in length.

Asian stocks gain on stronger Chinese factory data

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stocks rose Tuesday after Chinese manufacturing improved, with investors looking ahead to U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s appearance before legislators.

Benchmarks in Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney advanced.

Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index closed down 0.5% overnight but ended November up 10.8% for its biggest monthly gain since April.

BEIJING, Nov 30 (APP): Pakistan’s participation as special partner of cooperation in the 17th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) held in Nanning, Guangxi province of China showed its sincere wish to strengthen cooperation with China and ASEAN countries, a Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesperson said on Monday.

4 Azerbaijani civilians killed in mine explosion laid by Armenian forces

29 Nov 2020; MEMO: Four Azerbaijani civilians lost their lives after a mine laid by Armenian forces exploded, state authorities said Saturday, Anadolu Agency reports.

The explosion occurred when a vehicle carrying the civilians came in contact with the landmine in the village of Ashagi Seyidahmedli of Fuzuli province, the Chief Prosecutor's Office said.

The province was recently liberated by the Azerbaijani army from nearly three-decades of Armenian occupation.

China says hopes U.S. won't erect barriers to cooperation after blacklist report

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Monday that it hoped the United States will not erect barriers and obstacles to cooperation, in response to reports Washington is poised to add Chinese firms SMIC and CNOOC to a defense blacklist.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the comments at a news briefing.

China to impose sanctions on four over egregious behaviour on Hong Kong

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will impose sanctions on four people over their egregious behaviour regarding the Asian financial hub of Hong Kong, it said on Monday.

They will be banned from entering China, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing.

This month, the United States said it was imposing sanctions on four more Chinese individuals related to actions over the former British colony, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Thai pro-democracy protesters rally outside army base

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s indefatigable pro-democracy activists took to Bangkok’s streets again Sunday, this time to protest the army as they push forward with their campaign for sweeping reforms, including to the nation’s monarchy.

Around 800 protesters marched to the base of the 11th Infantry Regiment, which is closely associated with the country’s royal palace. Their number grew to well over 1,000 as they settled in for speeches by protest leaders.

Thai protesters challenge king's military command

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai anti-government protesters challenged on Sunday King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s personal control over some army units to condemn the military’s role in politics.

It was the latest open defiance of the king by protesters, who have broken taboos by criticising the monarchy in a country where it is officially revered under the constitution and laws ban insulting it.

Hundreds of protesters gathered to march to the 11th Infantry Regiment, one of two units that were moved under the king’s command in 2019.

HK's top leader piles up cash at home after U.S. sanctions

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says she has to pile up cash at home as she has been unable to open a bank account in the global financial centre since Washington sanctioned her shortly after Beijing imposed a national security law on the city.

Beijing circumvented Hong Kong’s legislature and imposed a national security law on the former British colony on June 30, a move condemned by some foreign governments, business groups and rights groups.

88 kg of heroin seized in Myanmar's central region

YANGON, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities seized 88 kilograms of heroin in Mandalay region, according to a release from the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, the joint anti-narcotic police made a seizure in Patheingyi township on Saturday.

Heroin worth 5.28 billion kyats (4.06 million U.S. dollars) were confiscated from a truck.
