Uzbekistan to repatriate more citizens from crowded Syrian camps

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: Uzbekistan plans to repatriate another group of its citizens, mostly women and children, from Syria where they are staying at crowded camps with other families of Daesh fighters, an Uzbek government source told Reuters on Friday, Reuters reports.

A government delegation from Tashkent has visited the Al-Hawl and Roj camps in the Kurdish-controlled part of Syria and met over 100 Uzbeks staying there to discuss their return home, the source said.

Malaysia will hold an election after coronavirus is over: PM

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia will hold a general election when the novel coronavirus pandemic is over, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said on Saturday, shortly after he averted a showdown by winning parliamentary support for his administration’s budget.

Parliament passed the largest-ever budget by a voice vote on Thursday despite weeks of threats by the opposition and some of Muhyiddin’s allies to derail the government’s 2021 spending plan, which could have triggered a crisis.

JAPAN: Tokyo Olympic organizers plan to host 18 test events

TOKYO (AP) — The postponed Tokyo Olympics are getting a kickstart.

Local organizers on Friday announced a series of 18 test events set to begin in March and run into May.

The Tokyo Olympics are set to open on July 23, 2021, after being postponed eight months ago because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement in an online news conference came the same day that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported a one-day record of 570 new coronavirus infections in the capital.

S. Korea agency says N. Korea executed people, shut capital

President Alvi invites China-ASEAN countries businessmen to invest in Pakistan’s SEZs

S. Korea to provide US$700,000 aid to hurricane-hit Latin American nations

SEOUL, Nov 27 (NNN-YONHAP) — South Korea will provide US$700,000 worth of humanitarian aid to Colombia, Honduras and Nicaragua to help them cope with damage from Hurricane Iota, the foreign ministry said Friday.

The Latin American countries were devastated Monday by the category 5 hurricane, the biggest storm this year in the Atlantic Ocean.

“Our government hopes that the aid will help the peoples of those countries facing hardship in recovery, due to the stronger hurricane than the previous Hurricane Eta,” the ministry said in a release.

China to charge 12 from Hong Kong caught fleeing by boat

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Chinese authorities said on Friday they are set to charge 12 people from Hong Kong with border violations after they were detained in China more than three months ago while trying to flee from the city by speedboat.

The 12, who had all faced charges in Hong Kong linked to anti-government protests, have been held virtually incommunicado in a mainland prison since they were detained at sea, apparently while trying to reach the democratic island of Taiwan.

Japan's Suga vows stimulus package focusing on green, digital innovation

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga pledged on Friday to compile a stimulus package focused on pulling the economy out of a pandemic-induced slump through green investment and digital innovation.

“We are looking into a package sufficient to underpin an economic recovery while achieving a digitalised, carbon-neutral post-pandemic society,” Suga said during a meeting of the government’s top economic council.

Suga did not offer any details on how big the stimulus package could be.

Indonesia reaffirms its support for Palestine independence

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi reaffirmed her country`s firm support for Palestinian independence.

During a phone call with her Palestinian counterpart Riyad Al-Maliki, Marsudi inquired about the dialogue between Hamas and Fatah and its preparation for the elections to end internal division, as announced by President Mahmoud Abbas in his speech before the United Nations General Assembly.
