Thai Parliament meets to debate political protest tensions

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s Parliament began a special session Monday that was called to address tensions as pro-democracy protests draw students and other demonstrators into the streets almost daily demanding the prime minister’s resignation and other reforms.

As Speaker of the House Chuan Leekpai began the session, only 450 of the total of 731 members of both houses had signed in for the meeting.

Typhoon displaces thousands, floods villages in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A fast-moving typhoon forced thousands of villagers to flee to safety in provinces south of the Philippine capital Monday, flooding rural villages and ripping off roofs, officials said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from Typhoon Molave, but authorities reported at least one person was missing and seven others were rescued after their yacht sank off Batangas province south of Manila.

Parwaaz Hai Junoon’ to become first Pakistani film to release in Chinese mainland theaters in decades

BEIJING, Oct 23 (APP): Ahead of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan in 2021, a Pakistani air force film has been scheduled to hit Chinese theaters on November 13, making it the first Pakistani movie to release in Chinese mainland cinemas in decades.

Britain signs deal with Japan, its first major trade agreement post-Brexit

TOKYO, Oct 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Britain today signed a trade agreement with Japan, its first major post-Brexit trade deal just as negotiations on its pact with the European Union are still ongoing.

AFP reported that the pact, which was agreed after just a few months of talks over the summer, would boost business between the two by £15.2 billion (US$19.5 billion). The deal was also seen as proof that the UK would be able to sign similar deals with other countries.

China urges U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan: spokesperson

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China urges the United States to cease arms sales to and military contact with Taiwan, and cancel relevant arms sales plans, to avoid further damages to China-U.S. ties and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, a spokesperson with the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks when asked to comment on the United States' newly approved plans to sell three weapons systems worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan.

Huawei sales up, but growth slows under virus, US pressure

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese tech giant Huawei, one of the biggest makers of smartphones and switching equipment, said Friday its revenue rose 9.9% in the first nine months of this year, but growth decelerated in the face of U.S. sanctions and the coronavirus pandemic.

Huawei Technologies Ltd., gave no sales figure for the most recent quarter ending in September, but growth for the first three quarters was down from the 13.1% reported for the first half of the year.

China’s Xi takes jabs at US in Korean War commemoration

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping condemned “unilateralism, protectionism and extreme egoism” in a jab at the United States made during a rally Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of China’s entry into the 1950-53 Korean War.

China refers to the conflict, in which it sent troops to aid North Korean forces against a United Nations coalition led by America, as the “War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea.”

China hopes for change if Biden wins, but little likely

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese leaders hope Washington will tone down conflicts over trade, technology and security if Joe Biden wins the Nov. 3 presidential election. But any shift is likely to be in style, not substance, as frustration with Beijing increases across the American political spectrum.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers and their constituents seem disinclined to adopt a softer approach toward China, possibly presaging more strife ahead, regardless of the election’s outcome.

Azerbaijan downs another Armenian SU-25 fighter jet

22 Oct 2020; MEMO: Azerbaijan on Sunday shot down another Armenian Su-25 fighter jet, according to the country’s Defense Ministry – the second Su-25 to be downed in as many days, Anadolu Agency reports.

In a statement, the ministry said the Su-25 attack aircraft was trying to launch airstrikes on Azerbaijani positions in the Jabrayil region when it was shot down, like its predecessor on Saturday.

The jet was destroyed by Azerbaijani forces at around 12:30 p.m. (0830GMT), the ministry said.

USA: Pompeo to visit Indonesia after spy plane rebuff

JAKARTA (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Indonesia next week, his first trip to the country since its leadership rejected a U.S. proposal to host its spy planes.

Pompeo will address an Islamic youth group conference on religion and civilisation in Jakarta, Indonesia’s foreign minister Retno Marsudi said on Thursday, without providing further details of his itinerary.

Earlier, Pompeo told reporters in Washington that he hoped to meet with Retno and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, on the trip.
