China welcomes Iran-IAEA deal on resolution of safeguards through friendly consultations

BEIJING, Aug 27 (APP): China on Thursday welcomed and applauded the agreement between Iran and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to allow voluntary access to the inspectors of the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog to two nuclear locations.

South Korea: New virus cases spike to over 400, toughest antivirus curbs in offing

SEOUL, Aug 27 (NNN-YONHAP) — The number of daily new coronavirus cases in South Korea spiked to a nearly six-month high of over 400 on Thursday as sporadic cluster infections across the country continued to pile up, forcing health authorities to seriously consider implementing the country’s toughest antivirus curbs.

The country reported 441 new COVID-19 cases, including 434 local infections, raising the total caseload to 18,706, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Proposal on Sabah in Philippines passport not an official stand

KUALA LUMPUR,  Aug 27 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The proposal to include Sabah and 200 miles of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the passport of Philippines is not a new move nor is it an official stand of the republic’s government, said Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaafar.

He said the matter was a proposal of a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of The Philippine House of Representatives to create a substitute bill to amend, replace or abolish the Philippines Passport Act 1996.

Singapore tightens work pass requirements

SINGAPORE, Aug 27 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Singapore is raising salary criteria for the Employment Pass (EP) and S Pass while setting for the first time, higher salary requirements in the financial services sector.

 For EP, it will be raised further to S$4,500 for all new applicants from Sept 1, 2020, according to the republic’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on its website.

The minimum qualifying salary for EP which allows foreign professionals, managers and executives to work in Singapore, was raised to S$3,900 from May 1, 2020.

TikTok CEO resigns amid US pressure to sell video app

Hong Kong, Aug 27 (AP) TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer resigned Thursday amid US pressure for its Chinese owner to sell the popular video app, which the White House says is a security risk.

In a letter to employees, Mayer said his decision to leave comes after the political environment has sharply changed .

Typhoon barrels into North Korea after causing damage in South

Seoul, Aug 27 (AP) A typhoon that grazed South Korea, ripping off roofs and knocking out power to more than 1,600 households, made landfall in North Korea early Thursday.

South Korean authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties, and North Korea has not reported any damages.

Japan PM Abe to hold press conference on Friday amid health worries

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to hold a news conference on Friday at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT), his office said, amid growing concerns over his health, following two hospital examinations within a week.

Ruling party officials have said Abe’s health is fine, but the visits, one of which ran nearly eight hours, have fanned speculation whether he will be able to continue in the job until the end of his term in September 2021.

China arrests at least 10 at sea; HK media say suspects fleeing to Taiwan

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Chinese authorities have arrested at least 10 people after intercepting a boat off the coast of the southern province of Guangdong, the provincial Coast Guard Bureau said in a post on its social media site.

Hong Kong media, citing unidentified sources, said 12 people from the former British colony were arrested while sailing to Taiwan where they planned to apply for political asylum.

China criticizes US sanctions over South China Sea buildup

BEIJING (AP) — China on Thursday accused Washington of violating international law by imposing sanctions on officials and companies over Beijing’s military buildup in the disputed South China Sea, but gave no indication of possible retaliation.

The sanctions add to conflict over control of the sea, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Washington rejects Chinese claims to most of the area, portions of which also are claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines and other governments.

HONG KONG (AP) — TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer resigned Thursday amid U.S. pressure for its Chinese owner to sell the popular video app, which the White House says is a security risk.

In a letter to employees, Mayer said that his decision to leave comes after the “political environment has sharply changed.”

His resignation follows President Donald Trump’s order to ban TikTok unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells its U.S. operations to an American company within 90 days.
