Philippines bans poultry products from Australia over bird flu outbreak

MANILA, Aug 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Philippines said it has temporarily banned the importation of domestic and wild birds and their products from Australia after the presence of the highly pathogenic H7N7 avian flu virus was detected at an egg farm.

Australia, which accounts for less than 1 per cent of the Philippines’ poultry imports, has confirmed the outbreak at the egg farm in Victoria.

The ban covers poultry meat, day old chicks, eggs and semen, the Department of Agriculture said in its Aug 14 order made public on Wednesday.

Malaysia: Court allows PetroSaudi subsidiary’s request for release of US$1.357 mln

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The US$1.357 million out of US$340.26 million kept in a London law firm can now be released to PetroSaudi Oil Services (Venezuela) Limited (PSOS-VZ)  after the High Court today allowed the company’s application to amend an interim order which prohibited it from moving the monies to other entities.

The monies were said to be linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). The funds, which belong to PSOS, are currently in an escrow account held by Clyde & Co Co LLP in the United Kingdom.

JAPAN: Oil slips as demand worries outweigh U.S. stocks draw

TOKYO/LONDON (Reuters) - Oil prices eased on Wednesday on concerns U.S. fuel demand will face a slow recovery amid stalled talks on an economic stimulus package and despite support from a bigger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude stocks.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 were down 32 cents, or 0.7%, to $45.14 a barrel at 1005 GMT, but still not far off a 5-month high above $46 a barrel reached earlier in August.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude CLc1 futures were down 32 cents, or 0.75%, at $42.57 a barrel.

Kazakhstan resumes flights with seven countries

NUR-SULTAN, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan has begun resuming flights to the United Arab Emirates, Belarus and Germany, among other nations, local media reported.

According to Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport, a plane from the country's capital to the German city of Frankfurt took off on early Tuesday morning with 94 passengers on board, becoming the first direct flight between Kazakhstan and Germany since March.

Passengers aboard the plane must pass a COVID-19 test within 48 hours before their departure or within 72 hours after entering Germany.

National security law helps Hong Kong integrate into national development: commissioner of Chinese foreign ministry in HKSAR

HONG KONG, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The national security law in Hong Kong will help Hong Kong participate in the Belt and Road Initiative and integrate into national development, said Xie Feng, commissioner of the Chinese foreign ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

The law plugs national security loopholes in Hong Kong and will usher Hong Kong into a new phase of implementing "one country, two systems," Xie said Tuesday at an online forum on Hong Kong-Indonesia business opportunities.

Japan’s exports plunge amid crush from coronavirus pandemic

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s exports plunged 19.2% in July from a year earlier, as the coronavirus pandemic sapped global demand for goods from the third largest economy, government data showed Wednesday.

The Finance Ministry’s provisional numbers showed Japan’s imports fell 22.3% in July.

Exports to the U.S. especially suffered, declining 19.5%. Shipments of plastic goods, iron and steel and computer parts weakened.

But Japan recorded its first trade surplus in four months on the back of a recovery in China, where the coronavirus outbreak began.

Swedish diplomats leave North Korea, but embassy remains open

Stockholm, Aug 18 (AP) Swedish staff have left the country's embassy in North Korea but the diplomatic mission in Pyongyang remains open and is being staffed by local employees, officials said on Tuesday.

The main reason is that we have temporarily relocated our diplomats who are either on holiday or are part of a (scheduled) rotation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Anton Dahlquist said. Let me stress that we maintain our diplomatic relations with North Korea.

Covid-19: WHO says people in 20s, 30s, 40s increasingly driving pandemic

MANILA, Aug 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The World Health Organization said it was concerned that the novel coronavirus spread was being driven by people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, many of whom were unaware they were infected, posing a danger to vulnerable groups.

WHO officials said this month the proportion of younger people among those infected had risen globally, putting at risk vulnerable sectors of the population worldwide, including the elderly and sick people in densely populated areas with weak health services.
