Typhoon barrels into N. Korea after causing damage in South

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A typhoon that grazed South Korea, ripping off roofs and knocking out power to more than 1,600 households, made landfall in North Korea early Thursday. South Korean authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties, and North Korea has not reported any damages.

Japan PM Abe to consult with doctors before Friday news conference: sources

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will consult with doctors before holding a news conference on Friday, three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters, amid worries about his health after two recent hospital examinations.

Abe plans to hold the news conference on Friday afternoon, the sources said on Wednesday. He is expected to provide an explanation about his health and talk about the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, local media reported.

HK police arrest two pro-democracy lawmakers over 2019 protests

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong police arrested two opposition lawmakers on Wednesday over anti-government protests in July last year, one of whom was suspected of rioting during an incident in which he was attacked by a mob.

Police said Democratic Party lawmakers Lam Cheuk-ting and Ted Hui were among 16 people arrested.

Lam was arrested on suspicion of rioting on July 21, 2019, when a mob of over 100 men wielding sticks and poles attacked pro-democracy protesters, journalists and bystanders at a train station in the Yuen Long district, near the mainland border.

China protests alleged US spy plane incursion during drills

BEIJING (AP) — China is protesting the alleged incursion of a U.S. Air Force U-2 spy plane into a no-fly zone imposed during live-fire military exercises in the country’s north.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, the Ministry of National Defense said the action had “seriously interfered in normal exercise activities” and “severely incurred the risk of misjudgment and even of bringing about an unintended air-sea incident.”

Singapore President Says Providing Job Security To Be Priority In Coming Years

Halimah made the remarks, at the 14th parliament sitting which opened on Monday (yesterday). She said, the COVID-19 pandemic added to the employment pressure in Singapore.

Japan's Shinzo Abe likely to stay on as premier, close ally says

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is likely to fulfill his tenure as head of the ruling party, and therefore premier, until his term ends in September next year, one of his closest aides told Reuters on Tuesday.

Akira Amari dispelled concerns over the premier’s health, saying Abe now appeared to be in much better shape than the last time Amari saw him, in mid-August. On that occasion, Abe was “probably exhausted mentally”, he said.

Myanmar gov't plans to send youth volunteers for COVID-19 fight in western state

YANGON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar government has been planning to send youth volunteers to help combat COVID-19 in Rakhine state, where number of infections are rocketing recently, according to a release from the Information Ministry on Tuesday.

The volunteers will be assigned in shifts to take part in fight against the COVID-19 in the state, the release said.

On Sunday, a total of 24 volunteer healthcare professionals, along with medical equipment were sent to provide medical assistance in Rakhine state, the Health and Sports Ministry's release said.

China, US discuss economic coordination in trade meeting

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. and Chinese trade envoys discussed strengthening coordination of their countries’ economic policies during a phone meeting Tuesday, the Ministry of Commerce announced.

The announcement gave no details of the meeting held as part of the “Phase 1” truce aimed at ending a tariff war between the two biggest global economies that has disrupted worldwide trade.

Scientists say Hong Kong man got coronavirus a second time

(AP) --- University of Hong Kong scientists claim to have the first evidence of someone being reinfected with the virus that causes COVID-19.

Genetic tests revealed that a 33-year-old man returning to Hong Kong from a trip to Spain in mid-August had a different strain of the coronavirus than the one he’d previously been infected with in March, said Dr. Kelvin Kai-Wang To, the microbiologist who led the work.

The man had mild symptoms the first time and none the second time; his more recent infection was detected through screening and testing at the Hong Kong airport.
