Sudan asks UNSC to hold emergency session on Ethiopia dam

24 June 2021; MEMO: Sudan has asked the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency session to discuss the dispute over Ethiopia's Renaissance Dam, the official Sudanese News Agency (SNA) reported.

Foreign Minister, Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, called on the Security Council to urge Ethiopia to stop the "unilateral" filling of the dam "which exacerbates the dispute and poses a threat to regional and international peace and security".

Sudan asks UN Security Council to meet over Ethiopia’s Blue Nile dam

KHARTOUM, June 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Sudan asked the United Nations Security Council to meet and discuss a dispute over a giant dam being built by Ethiopia on the Blue Nile, a government statement said.

Ethiopia is pinning its hopes of economic development and power generation on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), while the two downstream countries – Egypt and Sudan – are concerned about it and seeking a binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.

Sudan: defence lawyers say ousted Bashir may have Covid-19

23 June 2021; MEMO: The defence lawyers representing ousted Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir have asked to transfer him from Kober Central Prison to a private hospital for examination because it is suspected that he may have Covid-19, state television has reported. Bashir is in the prison to the north of Khartoum serving time on a number of charges.

Sudan PM urges unity of military factions

23 June 2021; MEMO: Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok yesterday announced an initiative to unify the factions steering the country through its transition phase following the ouster of long time dictator Omar Al-Bashir.

Local media reported Hamdok warning of "deeply worrying" fractures within the country's security forces yesterday, and calling for reconciliation between civilians and military political factions who make up the transitional government.

Sudan rules out force to stop Ethiopia's second filling of Renaissance Dam

19 June 2021; MEMO: Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi ruled out using force to stop Ethiopia's second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Sudanese media reported on Friday.

"The first filling of the dam was a stab in the back," she conveyed in press remarks, noting that it caused a "massive shock" to confidence between the two countries.

Egypt delegation visits Sudan to discuss Ethiopia's Renaissance Dam

10 June 2021; MEMO: Egypt's Ministers of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry and Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Aty yesterday visited the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, to discuss bilateral cooperation and issues of common interest including Ethiopia's Renaissance Dam, local media outlets reported.

ICC Urges Sudan To Hand Over Those Accused Of Committing War Crimes In Darfur

KHARTOUM, Jun 3 (NNN-SUNA) – Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, yesterday urged the Sudanese government, to hand over those accused of committing war crimes in Darfur to the ICC.

Bensouda made the demand at a press conference, in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, after concluding a visit to Darfur. A team of ICC investigators would arrive in Sudan in the coming period, to collect further field evidences, she said.

Sudan declares state of emergency, imposes curfew in Port Sudan following tribal clashes

26 May 2021; MEMO: Sudan has declared a state of emergency and imposed a night curfew in the Red Sea state of Port Sudan after tribal violence that took place on Monday resulted in the killing of at least five children, according to an official government statement cited by the state-run Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

The statement, issued by the state governor's media office, did not give details on the unrest.

Qatari FM in Sudan to discuss bilateral ties

24 May 2021; MEMO: Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani arrived in Khartoum late yesterday for talks with Sudanese officials on ways of enhancing bilateral relations.

During his two-day visit, the top Qatari diplomat will meet with the head of Sudan's Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, and other senior officials, according to the official news agency SUNA.
