Yemen launches door-to-door polio immunization for over 4 mln children

SANAA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's health authorities on Saturday launched a polio vaccination campaign for more than 4 million children in the north of the war-torn country.

The three-day campaign is supported by the World Health Organization, the UNICEF and other international aid agencies, the local health authorities said in a statement.

The door-to-door immunization targets children under the age of five.

Iran condemns killing of top scientist, int'l community expresses concern

TEHRAN, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Following the recent killing of its top nuclear scientist, Iran has condemned the violence and vowed punishment, while regional countries and global bodies have expressed concern over rising tensions in the region and urged restraint.

On Friday, high-ranking Iranian nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated near the capital city of Tehran by "armed terrorists," according to the Iranian Ministry of Defense.

Israel: Hundreds protest outside Netanyahu's Jerusalem home

Jerusalem, Nov 29 (AP-PTI) About 1,000 protesters gathered outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official residence in Jerusalem on Saturday night, pressing ahead with their months-long campaign demanding his resignation.

A mix of grassroots groups have held the weekly protests, saying Netanyahu should step down while he is on trial for corruption and because of his handling of the coronavirus in Israel.

Clashes with cleric’s supporters kill 5 in southern Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) — Supporters of a firebrand Iraqi cleric shot dead five people on Saturday, according to medical officials, in overnight clashes with anti-government protesters in southern Iraq.

The anti-government demonstrators attempted to bloc the path of a rally supporting Shiite Muslim leader Moqtada al-Sadr. Followers of the populist cleric also wounded 40 others in the clashes, according to two medical officials.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Iraq: Liquor store explodes in Baghdad

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: A store selling alcoholic beverages in the centre of the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad was attacked yesterday.

"A home-made audio device that was placed near a store selling alcoholic drinks within the swimming pool intersection in Karrada, exploded earlier today," a security source told Alsumaria, adding that there were no injuries reported.

Mafias exploit Lebanese to smuggle them into Europe

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: Mafias are exploiting the Lebanese people to smuggle them into Europe, Lebanon's consul in Turkey, Mazen Kabbara, warned yesterday.

"The Lebanese are at risk of mafias that exploit them under the pretext of smuggling them into Europe, and then leave them stranded on Turkish soil or on Greek or Bulgarian borders after taking all their money," Kabbara was quoted by official National News Agency as saying.

Turkish, Saudi foreign ministers hold 'sincere' meeting

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday said he held a meeting with his Saudi counterpart to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues, Anadolu Agency reports.

Cavusoglu said in a tweet that the "sincere" meeting with Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud was held on the occasion of the 47th session of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers.

Palestine: Gaza exports olive oil to Gulf states for the first time

The Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture in Gaza announced on Thursday that it will be importing Palestinian olive oil for the first time from the besieged enclave, to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Speaking to the press, the ministry's Spokesman Adham Al-Basyouni disclosed: "44 tones of olive oil were exported to Arab countries after achieving self-sufficiency for the first time."

Jordan asserts custodianship of Al-Aqsa fearing Saudi takeover

27 Nov 2020; MEMO: The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has affirmed its custodianship of Al-Aqsa Mosque following concerns that the fate of Jerusalem's Islamic sacred sites could be up for grabs in any future normalisation between Israel and Saudi Arabia. The concerns are particularly strong during these remaining weeks of the administration of US President Donald Trump.
