U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff calls for Gulf Arab unity to counter Iran

DUBAI (Reuters) - United States Air Force Chief of Staff David Goldfein on Saturday pressed Gulf Arab states to reconcile differences and unify military capabilities as tensions with Iran simmer.

Washington sees an ongoing dispute that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and non-Gulf state Egypt have with Qatar as a threat to efforts to contain Iran and has pushed for a united front.

Turkey says it bought Russian S-400s to use them, not put them aside

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey bought S-400 missile defense systems from Russia to use them, not put them aside, the head of the Turkish Defense Industry Directorate said on Saturday, days after talks between President Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Erdogan and Trump held talks in Washington on Wednesday to overcome increasing differences between the NATO allies, ranging from Syria policy to sanctions threats over Turkey’s purchase of the S-400s, which Washington says pose a threat to its Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets.

Last remains of Ethiopian plane crash victims buried, families say little notice given

ADDIS ABABA/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The last remains of 157 people killed aboard an Ethiopian Airlines plane in March were interred at the crash site this week, farmers and families told Reuters, but some relatives were upset they had been unable to take part in the ceremony.

Nadia Milleron, whose daughter Samya Stumo was killed, said an email was sent to some families — but not all — notifying them of the burial just two days before it happened.

Habib Jemli assigned to form Tunisian gov't

TUNIS, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- President Kais Saied officially approved Habib Jemli on Friday to form the new government, according to a statement by the Tunisian presidency.

Jemli was the candidate of Tunisia's Islamist party Ennahdha, the party that won the parliamentary elections on Oct. 6, 2019.

The future prime minister should form his government within a period not exceeding one month from Friday in accordance with the constitution.

An agronomist, Jemli was born on March 28, 1959 in Kairouan, a province of central Tunisia. He is married and has four children.

Israel strikes Hamas targets after 2 rockets fired from Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel said its aircraft hit military sites for Gaza’s Hamas rulers early Saturday after two rockets were fired from the Palestinian enclave.

This was Israel’s first strike against Hamas since the start of this week’s cross-border fighting with another Gaza militant group, the Iran-backed Islamic jihad. The shooting ended in a shaky cease-fire announced Thursday.

The worst bout of fighting in months began Tuesday after Israel’s targeted killing of a senior Islamic Jihad commander in an airstrike.

Turks protest Israel's attacks on Palestinians

ANKARA, 15 Nov 2019; AA: Scores of people and representatives of non-governmental organizations convened in front of Israel's embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday to protest against Israel's attacks on Palestinians. 

Ahmet Sanver, chairman of the Ankara branch of the Anatolia Youth Association, delivered a speech on behalf of the protesters.

Turkey’s largest observatory to operate in 2021

ERZURUM, 15 Nov 2019; AA: An observatory in eastern Turkey will receive the first light from space by the end of 2021.

Construction of Eastern Anatolian Observatory (DAG), which continues only five months a year due to harsh winter conditions, is nearly complete, Director Cahit Yesilyaprak told Anadolu Agency.

The observatory is located at an altitude of 3,170 meters (10,400 feet) in the Karakaya Hills in Konakli village of eastern Erzurum province.

Rouhani: Iran seeking regional unity, fraternity

Tehran, Nov 15, IRNA - President Hassan Rouhani on Friday said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking unity and fraternity among the regional states as well as following the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The president was addressing a meeting between the country's officials along with participants of the International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
