India: BRD Medical College Gorakhpur fined Rs 5 crore

Gorakhpur (UP), Jan 8 (PTI) National Green Tribunal (NGT) has slapped a fine of Rs 5 crores on BRD Medical college in Gorakhpur for failing to ensure proper disposal of medical waste, said sources in the Pollution Control Board office here.

As per a senior official in the PCB office, a team of NGT had visited the medical college in November and subsequently asked the college to pay Rs 5 crore fine.

India: GRP & Pantry Car Manager brawl delays train for 1.5 hrs

KANPUR: Howrah-Jodhpur Express remained standing at Kanpur Central after a brawl between GRP personal and the pantry car manager on Tuesday afternoon.

Their argument ensued with the water bottle issue. According to news reports, the GRP personal did not pay the price of two water bottles taken from the pantry car. The manager demanded the money but he was allegedly beaten by the railway policeman. The pantry car manager complained of this incident to the control room.

India: Tohit Salmani arrested for derogatory remarks on social media against Modi, Yogi

Sambhal (UP), Jan 8 (PTI) A man was arrested here for posting a defamatory video on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the police said Tuesday.

Tohit Salmani, a resident of Narauli area was arrested on Monday night, police station in-charge of Baniyather, Sanjay Singh said.

Following a complaint by one Mukim Singh, a case was registered against Salmani and further investigations are on, he added.

Indian Lok Sabha passes citizenship bill - excludes Muslims

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) A bill seeking to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangaldesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Piloting the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the Opposition that the bill was not against the provisions of the Constitution and would give succour to persecuted minorities in the three neighbouring countries.

EU imports of U.S. soybeans up 112 percent

BRUSSELS, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- During the July-December 2018 market year, European imports of U.S. soybeans increased by 112 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to information released by the European Commission on Monday, the U.S. remains Europe's number one soybean supplier, with a share of 75 percent of EU imports.

Conversely, Europe remains by far the top destination of U.S. soybean exports (28 percent), followed by Argentina (10 percent) and Mexico (9 percent).

Rahul Gandhi meets former British PM Tony Blair

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday met former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and discussed a host of issues of mutual interest.

Blair is in the national capital to participate in the 'Raisina Dialogue', considered India's flagship annual geo-political and geo-strategic conference.

"I met with Mr Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the UK, in Delhi today. I enjoyed our discussion, that covered a wide range of topics of mutual interest," Gandhi said in a Facebook post.

Blair was the prime minister of Britain from 1997 to 2007.

India: Traders recite Hanuman Chalisa at police station

KANPUR: Enraged traders expressed disapproval at the driver’s harassment at the Pheelkhana police station here on Tuesday. They were resenting at the detention of a sweets shop’s loader driver who was unloading goods in Naughada Cloth Market area on Monday evening.

They staged a sit-in and recited the religious manuscript Hanuman Chalisa. Following an assurance by the City Magistrate of strict action against the policemen, they ended their agitation.

India: 5 of family die after consuming poisonous milk

Pilibhit (UP) Jan 8 (PTI) Five members of a family died on Tuesday after allegedly consuming poisonous milk in Benipur village here, police said.

According to villagers, one Chetram had come to meet the head of the family, Begraj, early on Tuesday and gave him some milk which the family is said to have consumed, they said.

The deceased were identified as Begraj (65), his wife Ramwati (60), their son Nem Chandra (35), daughter-in-law Mamta (32) and daughter Gayatri (28), the police said.
