Death toll in Northern California wildfire rises to 23

PARADISE, Calif. (AP) — The few residents of the burned-out Northern California city of Paradise who were able to inspect their property on Saturday saw nothing but disappointment.

Nearly the entire city of 27,000 residents lay in ruins and most were still barred from returning to the still hazardous town where small fires continued to flare.

India: Case against quack for 'raping' minor at clinic

Shahjahanpur (UP), Nov 11 (PTI) A case has been registered against a quack for allegedly raping the minor daughter of a woman who works at his clinic in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad district, police said Sunday.

The accused, Vinod Kushwaha, came to the woman's house at Khajuria Nagla village in Shahjahanpur district last Wednesday and took her daughter to the clinic, where he raped the minor after holding her up as a hostage, said Avnish Yadav, station house officer, Allahganj.

India: Man arrested for sexually assaulting, killing cousin

Ballia (UP), Nov 11 (PTI) A 22-year-old man has been arrested for reportedly sexually assaulting and killing his minor cousin, police said Sunday.

"The incident took place on November 8 in Garhwar police station area. The accused was arrested on Saturday," Superintendent of Police Sriparna Ganguly said.

The body of the 8-year-old has been sent for postmortem, the officer said.

India: Man lynched for raping 9-year-old niece

Jamshedpur, Nov 10 (PTI) A 21-year-old man was beaten to death by villagers in West Singhbhum district after he allegedly raped his 9-year-old niece, police said on Saturday.

Taluka Purty, the victim's paternal uncle, raped her in one room of the house on Friday night at Karlajori village under Muffassil police station area.

The girl's grand-mother was in another room when the incident happened, police said.

The villagers reached the spot on hearing the scream of the victim, caught hold of the accused and beat him up.

Objections raised at UP Board exam centres

KANPUR: Uttar Pradesh Board examination centres for Kanpur Nagar district have been set up by ignoring defined rules. As many as eight objections were made online so far.

If complaints will be found correct, a complete report would be sent to the Board Headquarters at Allahabad, said Deputy Inspector of Schools SK Tiwari, adding that the Board has to finalise everything.

10-yr-old girl raped in east Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 10 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a family friend in east Delhi's New Ashok Nagar, police said Saturday.

The incident happened on Friday night.

The accused was known to the girl's family and took her with him for an outing on Friday and then raped her, police said.

The victim then narrated the ordeal to her parents who approached police and a case was registered in the matter.

The accused, who worked as a labourer at a shop, was arrested, said a senior police officer.

Clock tower to find time again

KANPUR:  Busy as usual, the Ghantaghar crossing finds people’s ample movement every day. But they never look high at the clock tower because its hands do not move. It remains calm in the tower.  

As told by the shopkeepers there, the machine of the clock had lost its function several years ago. Even authorities concerned did not care about its functioning. But lately there rang a buzz in their ears suddenly.

China, US sparring continues over South China Sea

WASHINGTON (AP) — China bluntly told the United States to stop sending ships and military aircraft close to islands claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea, during talks that set the stage for a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping later this month.

The U.S. pushed back Friday, insisting it will continue to “fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.” In late September, U.S. and Chinese vessels nearly collided near a disputed reef.

Artists, intellectuals call for ‘European Republic’

BERLIN (AP) — Artists and intellectuals across Europe are calling for the founding of a continentwide republic to replace its many nation states.

Activists planned to proclaim a “European Republic” in dozens of cities at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT) Saturday, almost exactly 100 years after the end of World War I.

The event is being organized by a group calling itself the European Balcony Project. Its listed supporters include political scientists, philosophers and writers such as Austrian literature Nobel prize laureate Elfriede Jelinek.

Death toll from Northern California's raging wildfire rises to 9

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Northern California's raging wildfire, dubbed Camp Fire, has climbed to nine, Butte County Sheriff Korey Honea said at a press conference Friday night.

A spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said the fire had destroyed more than 6,700 structures, including 6,453 homes and over 250 commercial buildings.

This is the most destructive wildfire in the Golden State's history.
