UN Ship Arrives At Yemen’s Port To Transfer Crude Oil From Abandoned Tanker

SANAA, Jul 17 (NNN-SABA) – The UN replacement ship arrived in Yemen’s Red Sea port city of Hodeidah yesterday, in preparation to transfer crude oil from a tanker, abandoned off the coast of the country since 2015, UN officials at the scene told reporters.

In the upcoming two-week first phase of the emergency rescue operation, the replacement vessel, Nautica, will transfer all crude from the floating supertanker, Safer, before a catenary anchor leg mooring buoy will be secured to the seabed, to fix the replacement ship in the second phase, according to the UN officials.

Houthi shelling killed Two in SW Yemen: medical official

SANAA, Jul 16 (NNN-SABA) – Houthi rebels shelled a residential area in Yemen’s south-western province of Taiz yesterday, killing a mother and her son, a local medical official said.

The shelling struck their house in the village of al-Hajamah, in the al-Abous district, damaging several other houses and farms in the area.

The medical official said, the attack was the latest in a series of Houthi shellings on Taiz, which has been under the rebels’ siege for more than seven years.

UN vessel sets sail to prevent oil spill from decaying tanker off Yemen's coast

SANAA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A vessel chartered by the United Nations set sail from Djibouti on Saturday toward Yemen to transfer oil from a deteriorating tanker that poses a major environmental and humanitarian threat.

The replacement vessel, Nautica, is expected to arrive at the site of the FSO Safer supertanker on Sunday. Once it arrives, a meticulous ship-to-ship transfer operation will be initiated to extract the oil from the Safer, according to a statement from the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Yemen, Cuba discuss environmental cooperation

ADEN (Yemen), July 10 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Yemen and Cuba on Sunday discussed on several aspects concerning bilateral cooperation in environmental matters, sustainable development and climate actions, the Saba news agency reported. 

According to Saba, the Yemeni Water and Environment Minister Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi and the Cuban Science, Technology and Environment Minister Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya held cordial talks.

Fire Destroys 11 Homes In Displaced Yemenis’ Camp

SANAA, Jun 29 (NNN-YPA) – A fire broke out yesterday, in a camp for displaced people in western Yemen, destroying 11 houses, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported.

The fire was caused by fireworks used in the Eid al-Adha celebration, in the Al-Qanawis district of Hodeida province, according to a Houthi official. Furniture, food, and livestock were consumed by the flames, but no one was injured.

Turkish Red Crescent distributes meat to 3,000 Yemeni families on Eid Al-Adha

28 June 2023; MEMO: The Turkish Red Crescent on Wednesday began distributing meat to 3,000 families in four Yemeni provinces on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, reports Anadolu Agency.

The head of the Turkish Red Crescent branch in Yemen, Ibrahim Obaid, told Anadolu that the meat distribution is taking place in Aden, Abyan, Lahij and Dhali.

Yemeni Gov’t Forces Raise Combat Readiness After Houthi Military Parade

ADEN, Jun 25 (NNN-SABA) – Yemeni government forces, yesterday, raised their combat readiness, in response to a large military parade held by the Houthi rebels, state media reported.

The country’s Defence Minister, Mohsen al-Daari, visited government forces in the south-western province of Taiz, where he met with commanders, to assess the preparedness for potential Houthi attacks.

Following the visit, al-Daari emphasised the importance of boosting cohesion and morale among the forces, and urged them to be on high alert for confronting any Houthi actions.

Two Military Staff Killed In Al-Qaeda Bombing Attack In Yemen

ADEN, Jun 23 (NNN-SABA) – Two Yemeni military staff were killed yesterday, in a bombing attack, carried out by the militants of the Yemen-based al-Qaeda branch, in the country’s southern province of Abyan, a security official said.

The incident occurred when the al-Qaeda militants planted an improvised explosive device, targeting a military ambulance of the government forces, in Abyan’s district of Mudiyah, causing a large explosion, the local security official said.

Yemenia Airways restarts direct flights from Sanaa to Saudi Arabia

SANAA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's national airline Yemenia Airways restarted on Saturday direct flights from Houthi-held Sanaa to Saudi Arabia after a nearly-eight-year suspension.

The flights connect the Yemeni capital of Sanaa with the Saudi cities of Jeddah and Madinah and are intended to help Yemeni pilgrims travel to the kingdom, marking another breakthrough amid ongoing international efforts to pave the way for peace in Yemen.

Commercial flights from Sanaa International Airport have been suspended since it came under the control of Houthi rebels in 2014.
