India: Ex-IPS officer gets 15 yrs in jail for smuggling drugs

Mumbai, Aug 19 (PTI) A special court on Monday convicted former IPS officer Saji Mohan for illegally possessing and smuggling drugs, sentencing him to 15 years in jail.

The special Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court also convicted a Haryana Police constable, Rajesh Kumar Kataria, in the 2009 case and awarded him 10-year imprisonment.

India: Need to reach out to Kashmiris, says Lt Gen Hooda

Pune, Aug 19 (PTI) There was a need to reach out to Kashmiris and bridge the communication gap through "political" measures, Lt Gen DS Hooda (retd) said, adding that scrapping the provisions of Article 370 had changed the status quo in restive Jammu and Kashmir.

There is a fear among Kashmiris about the future, and conditions there were have been deteriorating since 2013 due to upsurge in violence, interference from Pakistan and cease- fire violations, he claimed.

Indian Rupee slips 23 paise to 71.66 vs USD in early trade

Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) The rupee opened on a weak note and fell 23 paise to 71.66 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday amid rising crude oil prices and unabated foreign fund outflows.

On Monday, the rupee had tumbled 29 paise to close at an over six-month low of 71.43 against the US dollar amid growing worries over economic slump.

13 Dead, 20 Injured In India As Container Trailer Collides With Bus

MUMBAI, India, Aug 19 (NNN-PTI) – Thirteen people died and 20 others were injured, when a container trailer collided with a state transport bus, at Nimgul, in India’s western state of Maharashtra, 391 km from Mumbai, at 10:30 p.m. local time Sunday night, police official said.

The injured have been admitted to hospital, with 11 of them in critical condition.

The drivers of both vehicles died in the accident, as the collision was head-on, said the local police official.

India: BJP taking away leaders groomed by us: Maha NCP chief

Mumbai, Aug 18 (PTI) Maharashtra NCP president Jayant Patil on Sunday hit out at the BJP for poaching leaders "groomed" by his party and the Congress, likening it to "buying ready-made clothes".

He was speaking on the sidelines of a state-level NCP meeting here which was attended by several senior leaders, amid speculation that some of those absent may be on their way to the ruling BJP or Shiv Sena.

India: Girl forced into flesh trade by mother, raped by brother

Mumbai, Aug 18 (PTI) Five persons, including the mother, brother and "husband", of a teenage girl have been arrested on charges of forcing her into prostitution and rape, police said on Sunday.

According to a police official, the girl's mother forcibly married her off to a man in April 2018 though she was a minor, a Mankhurd police official said.

He said her husband used to beat her up for sexual favours, following which she returned to her mother's residence in in Mankhurd in east Mumbai.

Mumbai, Aug 12 (PTI) Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani on Monday announced plans to sell stakes in his flagship Reliance Industries' oil and chemical business to Saudi oil giant Aramco and in fuel retail network to BP plc of UK for a combined Rs 1.15 lakh crore as he looked to make his company a zero-net debt firm in 18 months.

India: School van driver gets 10 yrs RI for raping two girls in Maha

Thane, Aug 10 (PTI) A special court here has awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to a 35-year-old van driver for raping two girls, whom he used to drop at a local school.

Special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) court judge S P Gondhalekar convicted Tulshiram Manere and awarded the sentence to him on Friday.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 28,000 on the convict.

Indian Forex reserves down by USD 697 million

Mumbai, Aug 9 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 697.2 million to USD 428.952 billion in the week to August 2, due to fall in foreign currency assets, the latest weekly RBI data showed.

In the previous reporting week, the reserves had declined by USD 727.1 million to USD 429.649 billion.

The reserves had touched a life-time high of USD 430.376 billion in the week to July 19, 2019.

India: Man arrested for sending threat mails to Delhi CM

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) A Mumbai-based delivery boy was arrested for allegedly sending threat mails to senior political party leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the police said on Friday.

According to tweets shared by the official handle of Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crime Cell, the 28-year-old delivery boy Abhisekh Tiwari "gave life threats" to Kejriwal. Tiwari was arrested from Nala Sopara in Mumbai on Thursday.
