India: SP, BSP voice opposition to CAB

Lucknow, Dec 11 (PTI) The SP and the BSP came out openly against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, describing it as a "historical mistake" and "divisive" respectively.

"BJP's step like the CAB is not historic but a historical mistake," Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav said in a one-line tweet in Hindi.

BSP supremo Mayawati said, "The BSP is of the view that the CAB is divisive and unconstitutional. This is why the BSP voted against it in the Lok Sabha and will do the same in the Rajya Sabha too.

India: 5-year-old girl raped by teen in UP's Hamirpur

Hamirpur (UP), Dec 11 (PTI) A five-year-old girl was alleged raped by a teenager in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place at a village in Muskara area on Tuesday night. The 14-year-old boy took the girl, who was playing outside her house, to a secluded place and raped her, Additional Superintendent of Police, Santosh Kumar said.

India: UP Police to drop women at late hours

Lucknow, Dec 9 (PTI) Come Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Police will drop women travelling alone late at night to their destination to ensure their safety.

If any woman is alone on the streets from 10 pm to 6 pm, she can dial 112. The Police Response Vehicle (PRV) with women police personnel will drop her to her destination, Director General of Police O P Singh on Monday told PTI.

The PRV will also escort women driving scooters, if need arises, he said.

India: Citizenship Bill insult to country: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Dec 9 (PTI) Accusing the BJP of dividing society, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav here on Monday said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was an insult to country and its constitution.

"I had earlier said that their (BJP's) politics is diverting attention and dividing society. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is an insult to India and the Constitution," Yadav said in a tweet.

The former UP chief minister also alleged that the ruling BJP had failed to fulfil its poll promises.

India: Man held for rape in UP's Lucknow

Lucknow, Dec 8 (PTI) A man has been arrested for raping a 17-year-old girl here, police said here on Sunday.

According to police, the incident allegedly took place in the Madiaon area of the state capital on Saturday evening.

"The accused has been arrested and sent to jail. A case has been registered against him under the IPC and the POCSO Act," SHO of the Madiaon police station,,Vipin Kumar, said on Sunday.

He added that the case was registered on the complaint lodged by the girl's father.

India: Man held for raping minor daughter

Bahraich (UP), Dec 8 (PTI) A man in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping his minor daughter under the influence of alcohol, police said.

The 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the accused on Saturday night in a village under Kotwali Dehat police station, Circle Officer Triyambak Nath Dubey said.

The girl's mother filed a police complaint and the man was arrested in the morning, he said.

India: Minor's uncle among two held in rape case in UP

Bijnor, Dec 8 (PTI) Police here booked two people in connection with the rape of a minor girl, officials said on Sunday.

One of the accused is the uncle of the victim, they said.

Kotwali police station SHO Ramesh Chandra Sharma on Sunday said on Saturday, a 13-year-old girl was going to her school when she was given lift by her uncle.

India: Man arrested for raping 14-year-old deaf girl in UP

Pratapgarh, Dec 9 (PTI) A man has been arrested here for allegedly raping a 14-year-old deaf girl here, police said on Monday.

Sangramgarh Police Station SHO Tusharkant Tyagi said that the accused was arrested on Sunday and a case registered against him under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.

India: UP govt plans cow safaris

Lucknow, Dec 8 (PTI) Faced with stray cattle menace, the Uttar Pradesh government plans to set up 'cow safaris' in the state for better safety and upkeep of the animal.

The idea mooted by UP Animal and Husbandry minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary is in line with the Yogi government's aim of cow protection.

"The Yogi government is vigilant towards cow protection and it is our duty to save and secure them," Chaudhary said.
