India: Death Toll Rises To 10 In Violent Protests Over Citizenship Law In Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI, Dec 21 (NNN-PTI) – The death toll, during protests against the controversial new citizenship law, has risen to 10, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said today (Saturday).

The dead include an 8-year-old boy, who was trampled in the stampede, after police resorted to baton charging, in Dharara locality of Varanasi district.

According to Uttar Pradesh Police Chief, O P Singh, nine people were killed on Friday, and none of the deaths were caused by police firing.

India:CAA protests spreads to new areas in UP, internet suspended

Lucknow, Dec 20 (PTI) Anti-citizenship law protesters clashed with UP police after Friday prayers in several cities previously not hit by the agitation, including Firozabad and Bhadohi, and hurled stones and torched vehicles in some areas when they were stopped from taking out rallies.

The new areas hit by the violence included Bhadohi, Bahraich, Farrukhabad, police said, besides Gorakhpur and Sambhal, which had witnessed violent protests on Thursday too.

India: Fatehpur woman who alleged rape dies of burn in hospital

Kanpur (UP), Dec 19 (PTI) An 18-year-old woman from Fatehpur, who was allegedly raped and set ablaze, died on Thursday in a Kanpur hospital after battling for life for almost 120 hours, officials said.

"She had suffered from organ failure including lungs and kidneys following serious injuries and we tried to resuscitate her, but she could not survive and died," Head of the department (surgery) at the hospital, Sanjay Kala said.

The body has been sent to the mortuary for autopsy.

India: Protests against CAA, NRC in Lucknow; police use tear-gas shells

Lucknow, Dec 19 (PTI) Violent protests broke out in Lucknow against the new citizenship law on Thursday afternoon when a mob pelted stones and torched vehicles parked outside a police post.

DGP O.P Singh said police had to fire tear-gas shells to control the situation in Madeyganj area.

About 20 people have been taken into custody, he added.

India: Cong holds protest against CAA in Haridwar

Haridwar, Dec 17 (PTI) Congress workers in Uttarakhand's Haridwar district on Tuesday staged a protest against the amended Citizenship Act and police action on students of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Led by Jwalapur councilor Suhail Akhtar Qureshi and Congress city chief Sanjay Agarwal, the protesters raised slogans against the Centre.

The two leaders claimed that the BJP is trying to polarise the country under the guise of the amended citizenship law.

India: Atal Ghat's uneven stairs to be refurbished

Kanpur: With the Prime Minister's visit to the Atal Ghat in the recent days, it has acquired ample attention. The Central government had been providing a fund to maintain as many as 11 ghats in the city. As regards the Atal Ghat project it was built under the Namami Gangey programme by the Engineers India Limited.

Kanpur: Though the work on the metro project continues in the city, the obstacle comes owing to changing soil condition on the route selected for raising the pillars. The engineers find the soil different at places here. They do not find the same kind of soil in comparison to Lucknow. Therefore, the piling for the pillar gets impeded due to this persisting problem.

India: 'Cow smuggler's' property seized in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Dec 16 (PTI) Property worth Rs 50 lakh of a cow smuggler was seized under the UP Gangster Act in a village in Muzaffarnagar district, a senior official said.

Imran allegedly extracted money through illegal sources and bought property in Chapar village that was seized on Sunday, according to District Magistrate Selva Kumari J.

India: Missing woman found dead in UP

Varanasi, Dec 15 (PTI) The body of a 23-year-old woman missing for the last two days was found near the river Gomti in the Chaubeypur police station area, police said on Sunday.

The victim, Preeti Prajapati, was a teacher at a private school and lived in the Maldahiya area here, they said. Prajapati had left home on Wednesday to give tuition to one of her students but did not return, the police said.
