India: RSS-affiliated Hindutva students' protest ends; BHU Sanskrit department reopens

Varanasi (UP), Nov 22 (PTI) A group of Banaras Hindu University students protesting against the appointment of a Muslim professor at the Sanskirt literature department ended their 'dharna' on Friday.

The university had announced on Thursday that classes at the department would resume, indicating that the stir against the appointment of assistant professor Feroze Khan had ended.

India: Man held for offensive posts on social media

Ghaziabad, Nov 22 (PTI) A man was arrested here for posting communally sensitive messages on social media, police said here on Friday.

Mehtab Pathan, a resident of Eidgah Mohalla here, had lodged a complaint with police on Thursday, alleging that Gulshan Rajput, a resident of Railway Road, had uploaded objectionable posts on Facebook and WhatsApp, which might disturb peace and harmony, DSP (Sadar) Anshu Jain said.

India: Woman constable alleges rape by lawyer in Noida (UP)

Noida (UP), Nov 22 (PTI) An FIR has been registered against a lawyer who has been accused of rape by a woman police constable in Greater Noida, officials said on Friday.

Both the accused as well as the victim hail from Meerut district but the alleged incident took place at the constable's house in Beta 2 police station area here in June this year, the officials said.

India: BHU department reopens after days of protests over Muslim professor appointment

Varanasi, Nov 22 (PTI) The Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has reopened, the university announced, after days of protests by a section of students over the appointment of a Muslim professor at the department.

"The Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan, Banaras Hindu University, has reopened," a tweet by the university said on Thursday.

India: VHP takes out 'Ram baraat' from Ayodhya to Nepal

Ayodhya, Nov 21 (PTI) The Vishva Hindu Parishad took out the "Ram baraat" with much fanfare from Ayodhya on Thursday.

The procession will reach Janakpur in Nepal, which is considered as the ancestral place of Sita.

The wedding procession is expected to reach Janakpur by November 28, where the wedding of Lord Rama and Sita will be celebrated on December 1.

India: Akhilesh Yadav attacks BJP govt over potholes in UP

Lucknow, Nov 20 (PTI) Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday attacked the BJP government over its claimed efforts to make the state's roads pothole-free, saying the saffron party's "corruption" is the biggest hurdle to this.

"When we say there are potholes, the BJP government doesn't believe it. That's why the government should issue a helpline on which people can send photographs and inform about potholes. Will the government believe the people?," Akhilesh said in a tweet in Hindi.

India: Man gets life term for raping step-daughter

Muzaffarnagar, Nov 21 (PTI) An Uttar Pradesh court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his 17-year-old step-daughter after her mother died.

The Baghpat additional district and sessions judge Shailendra Pandey also slapped a fine of Rs 53,000 on Wednesday on Mahendra Kumar for the crime.

Kumar was arrested for raping his step-daughter in Baghpat in 2018 and he has been in jail since then, according to the prosecution.

India: 15-year-old rape victim commits suicide in UP's Bijnor

Bijnor (UP), Nov 19 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl hanged herself from the ceiling of her room here on Tuesday, a day after she was allegedly raped by two men of her village, police said.

Her mother alleged that the girl was raped on Monday and she narrated the incident to her sister on Tuesday morning and later hanged herself, they said.

Station House Officer Ashutosh Kumar said the body has been sent for post-mortem and the matter is being investigated.

The SHO said police are trying to trace the accused, who are absconding.

India: All five gang rape accused arrested: Noida police

Noida (UP), Nov 19 (PTI) The last two absconding men of the total five accused in the gang rape and assault of a 21-year-old woman in the city last week were arrested here on Tuesday, the Noida police said.

The duo -- Guddu and Shyamu -- both in their early 20s, were the first ones to rape the woman on the evening of November 13 near a park in sector 63 here.

They had then called three other friends who too forced themselves on the victim, the police said.

India: Consumers' hardship at power sub-station in Jajmau

Kanpur: Despite two counters at a power sub-station in Jajmau the consumers have to encounter an unpleasant ordeal. On both the counters there remained a long queue of the anxious consumers. They continued to stand and waited to deposit the bill in cash but what dashed their hope was sudden closure of the counters at 2 p.m. On enquiry it was later learnt to them that the window closed because of the lunchtime.
