India: Weekly off starts for policemen in district

KANPUR: The district policemen are in a fix as to whether they should leave the police station in 24-hour reserve day leave or not. This one day holiday has started from today. They have been instructed if they are required in an emergency they should be present within 15 minutes. If they were not reaching the police station in the time, a case of indiscipline would be used against them

India: Woman beaten to death over dowry in UP

Baghpat (UP), Aug 19 (PTI) A 22-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death with sticks by her in-laws in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district after their dowry demands were not met, police said on Monday.

According to the deceased's father, Puja got married to Saurav Rana in May last year. Immediately after marriage, her in-laws started demanding Rs 5 lakh in cash and a car, which he could not meet.

Lucknow, Aug 19 (PTI) Taking serious note of six killings in Allahabad, the Uttar Pradesh government on Monday suspended Senior Superintendent of Police Atul Sharma, an official said.

The decision came after three people were killed in Dhumanganj, one in Allahapur and a double murder took place in Tharwai area of Allahabad on Sunday.

"The Prayagraj SSP has been suspended," Additional Chief Secreatry (Home) Awanish Awasthi said.

India: UP govt increases VAT on petrol, diesel

Lucknow, Aug 19 (PTI) Petrol and diesel prices in Uttar Pradesh will go up by Rs 2.5 and Re 1 respectively from Monday midnight as the government increased VAT.

The Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol has been increased to 26.80 per cent or Rs 16.74 per litre (whichever is higher) and on diesel 17.48 per cent or Rs 9.41 per litre (whichever is higher), according to an official order.

The order will come into effect from Monday midnight.

India: Journalist, brother shot dead in UP

Lucknow, Aug 18 (PTI) A photojournalist with a prominent Hindi daily and his brother were shot dead in Saharanpur district on Sunday morning following an altercation over disposal of cow dung, police said.

Ashish (23), a photographer with Dainik Jagran newspaper, and his brother Ashutosh (19) were killed by their neighbour Mahipal Saini and his sons, Senior Superintendent of Police (Saharanpur) Dinesh Kumar P said.

India: UP CM Adityanath to reshuffle UP cabinet on Monday

Lucknow, Aug 18 (PTI) The much-awaited cabinet reshuffle of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will take place on Monday to fill the slots that have fallen vacant in the last few months, especially after some ministers entered the portals of Lok Sabha.

Adityanath took over the reins of the state in March 2017, and this will be the first expansion of his ministry.

Three UP ministers were elected to Parliament in the recent Lok Sabha polls, while one was sacked.

India: Two minor boys held for gang-raping 5-yr-old girl in UP

Banda, Aug 18 (PTI) Two minor boys were held in neighbouring Fatehpur district for allegedly gang-raping a five-year-old girl, police said on Sunday.

Circle officer of Bindki (under Fatehpur district) Abhishek Tiwari said, "On Saturday, two minor teenager boys had allegedly gang-raped a five-year-old girl at a lonely place."

"When the girl returned to her home on Sunday, she narrated the entire sequence of event. A case was registered on Sunday morning," he added.

Police also said that the medical examination of the girl confirmed that she was raped.

India: Woman harassed for dowry, kills herself in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Aug 19 (PTI) A woman hanged herself from the ceiling of her residence after being allegedly harassed for dowry by her in-laws in Muzaffarnagar district, police said Monday.

Rashmi had married Sumit Kumar eight months ago.

Kumar and his father have been arrested on abetment to suicide charge based on a complaint by the woman's father, they said.

The suicide was reported from Goela village on Sunday.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

India: PVR policemen brawled for taking front seat

Kanpur: A strange scene erupted the people moving by the side of the road in Bitthoor on Sunday. Two policemen along with the Head constable were found to be quarrelling along the road. The people on the road did not fathom the exact cause behind their quarrel. When it was known to the department the oddity increased in several folds. All the policemen were on patrol duty in Bitthoor.
