India: Highest number of undertrial prisoners in UP, Bihar, MP

New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh have the highest number of undertrial prisoners lodged in jails among the states and union territories, Union Minister Nityanand Rai said on Wednesday.

Rai said in Rajya Sabha that while Uttar Pradesh has 80,557 undertrial prisoners as of December 31, 2020, as many as 44,187 undertrial prisoners are in jails in Bihar followed by 31,712 prisoners in Madhya Pradesh.

India: Sahara India agents imprison themselves and its employees

Kanpur: The agents of the Sahara India Family have imprisoned themselves along with the employees and officers of the company here on Tuesday night.

They alleged that the depositors' dues were not paid.

The agents said that until the dues of the depositors are not paid, they will neither go home nor will they allow any employees and officers of Sahara Finance to go home.

One Agent reportedly said, that the depositors have not been able to get the payment even after months and years after the date of payment has elapsed. 

India: Jajmau posh school remains a spectacle of triviality

Kanpur: A posh school's office remained a spectacle of triviality for a very special reason. Whether it was the window or the door, the throng of the guardians was seen as they were desperately trying to reach the office clerks to show the copies of the fee deposit receipt today morning.

This was an unusual scene on the day of the declaration of the final results of all the classes except tenth and twelfth.

This mob converged due to instructions on the part of the school no fee, no result.

India: UP Cong chief Ajay Kumar Lallu resigns

Lucknow, Mar 15 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu on Tuesday resigned from his post after taking moral responsibility for the party's humiliating defeat in the state assembly polls.

The move comes after Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked the chiefs of its Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur units to resign amid continued rumblings in the party following its abject loss in the assembly elections in these states.

India: Kanpur police invoke Gangsters Act against BSP leader

Kanpur: Police invoked the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act against BSP leader Mohammad Safi, who unsuccessfully contested the Kanpur cantonment seat, and seven others for allegedly running a gang and being involved in illegal activities.

Police also said that Safi, (43 yrs), and others were booked at Chakeri police station here. 

Safi gained as many as 3,331 votes and stood third at the Kanpur cantonment seat. 

Russian war impacts Kanpur chemical business of soda ash

Kanpur: Fight continues in Ukraine. But its impact on the rate of soda ash is even felt here. An increase in the cost of soda ash has been affecting the business for the past three weeks.

According to the organisation's office bearers, 40% of soda ash is imported from Russia while nearly 30% comes from China.

As the fight has entered 21 days, the cost of soda ash is soaring continuously. Its rate on February 15 stayed at Rs 33 per kg has now soared to Rs 45 per kg. This comes to a 40% increase in the rate.

India: Kanpur admin paying back fines to accused in protests over CAA

Kanpur: The district administration began the process of returning fines collected from the accused persons booked for their alleged involvement in the protests against the 2019 Citizenship (Amendment Act).

The fine was collected for damages caused to public and private property during the protests.

It has been reported that the district administration handed over cheques to six persons on Tuesday.

India: Couple found hanging at home under ambiguous conditions in Bilhaur

Kanpur: A couple under ambiguous situations hanged to death with the noose of a sari tying it on a bamboo ladder at Balmiki Nagar in Bilhaur here.

Their bodies were found on Monday when Sushma, r/o Balmiki Nagar, went inside the couple's room.

She found 33-year-old Rahul's body was hanging on a bamboo ladder, while Neelam (28 years) was lying dead on the ground.

Upon finding the bodies, Sushma raised an alarm and alerted her neighbours. Soon, the locals alerted the police.

India: 'The Kashmir Files' made tax-free in UP

Lucknow, Mar 15 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday made 'The Kashmir Files' movie tax-free in the state.

"#TheKashmirFiles film has been made tax-free in Uttar Pradesh," Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in a tweet in Hindi.

Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri and produced by Zee Studios, the film depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the 1990s.

It stars Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi among others.

India: IIT-K develops automatic composting device

Kanpur: An automatic composting machine developed in collaboration with Imagineering Lab, IIT Kanpur, is deemed to be a meaningful move towards efficient waste management and mitigating climate change.

The device follows a step-wise simplistic process where at first the organic waste goes through the hopper and the inbuilt shredder cuts it into small and uniform pieces.

The finely cut waste then enters into the main body of the machine which contains a unique bacterial solution to initiate the composting process.
