India: Human trafficking gang busted in UP

Bahraich (UP), Feb 1 (PTI) A human trafficking racket was busted and five people were arrested while a woman held by them was freed in the Nanpara area here, police said on Tuesday.

Bahraich Senior Superintendent of Police Keshav Choudhary said a joint operation was launched on Monday evening by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Uttar Pradesh Police with the help of an NGO after learning about the activities of the gang.

India: 6 kill as electric bus loses control at Tat Mill Turn in Kanpur

Kanpur: As many as six people were killed and many others injured after an electric bus mowed down several bystanders.

The bus after losing its control, near Tat Mill crossroad here on Sunday lost its direction.

According to available news reports, police said that a group of 15 people were present at the site when the fateful incident came up.

The health condition of the injured people in the accident, reported happened at around 11:30 pm, is said to be serious, according to the news.

India: BJP youth wing office-bearer shot at in UP's Etawah

Etawah (UP) Jan 29 (PTI) A divisional-level office-bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, BJP's youth wing, was seriously injured after being shot at by motorcycle-borne assailants in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh's Etawah district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in the Friends Colony police station area on Friday evening, they said.

India: EC bans exist polls for UP assembly election

Lucknow, Jan 29 (PTI) The Election Commission has banned all exit polls pertaining to the coming Assembly elections from 7.00 am on February 10 to 6.30 pm on March 7.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, UP's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that conducting the exit polls, its publication in print or electronic media or its publicity has been banned from 7.00 am on February 10 to 6.30 pm on March 7.

Any person who violates the order will be punished with a two-year jail term or fine or both.

India: Gujrat awaits surprise result, not UP: Akhilesh Yadav

Ghaziabad (UP), Jan 29 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh elections will throw no surprise result, the real surprise would come up in the Gujarat assembly polls due later this year, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav claimed on Saturday exuding confidence of forming the government after the UP assembly polls.

Making a slew of poll promises, he said his alliance government would open "Samajwadi Canteens" for the poor to get subsidized meals for Rs 10.

Similarly, "ration outlets" would be started for the poor and labourers, he said.

India: Kanpur still below in overall UP viral infection cases

Kanpur: As many as 189 covid virus cases were reported here while Meerut & Varanasi received 321 and 316 cases respectively. In other districts like Lucknow, a maximum of 1,705 fresh cases were recorded, followed by Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, and Jhansi, with their 620, 388, and 330 cases, respectively.

Two deaths occurred in Kanpur district and the same count was seen in Chandauli and Gorakhpur districts respectively.

Active cases in the state were taken at a figure of 59601 whereas the overall total of infection shot up to 2005245.

India: Fire breaks out at sweet shop in Kanpur market, two die

Kanpur: At least two people died after a fire broke out at a sweets shop in Kahoo Kothi market of Kanpur city in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to the news, the leaping blaze of fire broke out at 4 am on Saturday in which the entire shop was burnt to ashes.

Two employees Shyam Narayan and Sunny of Raj Kishore Sweets, who were sleeping inside the shop died of suffocation.

Another employee Mohit is injured and has been admitted to the hospital, informs Ramesh Chandra, Fire Officer of Colonel Ganj here.

India: BJP leader booked for threatening on-duty cop in Mathura

Mathura, Jan 28 (PTI) A local BJP leader and two others have been booked for threatening a cop on duty here, police on Friday said.

District President Madhu Sharma on January 24 had threatened police on duty when her vehicle was stopped at 100-bed hospital Vrindavan for checking, the FIR filed by static magistrate Devendra Singh in Vrindavan Kotwali said.

According to police, when she was stopped for checking, she threatened the official on duty that she will make him lose his job if he doesn't back off.

India: Friday's plenty of sun comforted Jajmauites in Kanpur

Kanpur: Plenty of sun at today's afternoon comforted the Jajmauites as they collected in open spaces after Friday prayer.

The minimum temperature was recorded around 5° Celsius at 3 pm.

Such a scene was witnessed near a mosque along the road.

They were even overheard saying it was a good relief after many cold days.

The denizens found it hard to face the extremely cold weather during the past few days. Not only the cold air but the cloudy sky also kept them confined within indoors bearing the wintry brunt.

India: Two SP leaders, one Cong leader from UP join BJP

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, leaders of the Samajwadi Party and the Congress from the poll-bound state joined the BJP here on Thursday.

Samajwadi Party's sitting MLA Sharadveer Singh and former minister Shivakant Ojha, and former Congress MP Rakesh Sachan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at its headquarters here.

They were welcomed into the party fold by Union minister and Uttar Pradesh election in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan and his cabinet colleague Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
