Palestine: Israel denies electricity to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip

The suffocating siege imposed by Israel has left the residents unable to find a simple solution to the electricity problem, which affects all civil society sectors serving Palestinians and their essential institutions.

Egypt's Bread and Freedom Party cofounder spends two years in pretrial detention

05 Oct 2021; MEMO: Egyptian political activist Mohamed Walid has completed two years in pretrial detention after being arrested in September 2019 at Cairo Airport.

Walid was on his way to Saudi Arabia, where he worked, after returning from a holiday in Egypt after being forcibly disappeared during which time he was tortured.

According to another party cofounder, Elham Aidaros, on the day he went missing, Walid had his passport stamped and was inside the airport.

Israel: Recaptured Palestinian prisoner starts hunger strike

05 Oct 2021; MEMO: Mohammed Al-Arida, one of six Palestinian prisoners who escaped from Israel's high-security Gilboa Prison on 6 September and was recaptured days later, yesterday started an open-ended hunger strike protesting the strict detention conditions he is being held under, the PLO's Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission said.

Death toll in Cyclone Shaheen now 13 as storm churns in Oman

Dubai, Oct 4 (AP-PTI) The death toll from Cyclone Shaheen rose to 13 on Monday while other fishermen from Iran remained missing as the storm moved further inland into Oman and weakened.

Authorities in Oman said they found the body of a man who disappeared when floodwaters swept him away from his vehicle. On Sunday as the storm made landfall, they said a child similarly drowned and two foreigners from Asia died in a landslide. The country's National Committee for Emergency Management announced Monday afternoon seven additional deaths from the storm, without elaborating.

UAE to launch probe targeting asteroid between Mars, Jupiter

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates on Tuesday announced plans to send a probe to land on an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter to collect data on the origins of the universe, the latest project in the oil-rich federation’s ambitious space program.

The project targets a 2028 launch with a landing in 2033, a five-year journey in which the spacecraft will travel some 3.6 billion kilometers (2.2 billion miles).

Israeli PM discloses Mossad mission to find information about long-missing airman

JERUSALEM, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Israeli Mossad intelligence agents carried out a "wide-ranging and bold" operation last month to try to uncover the fate of Ron Arad, a long-missing Israeli airman, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Monday.

Arad, an air force navigator, bailed out of a warplane that went down over Lebanon during a 1986 bombing mission. Initially taken prisoner by Lebanese Amal guerrillas, he is widely assumed to no longer be alive. The aircraft's pilot was rescued.

Israel accuses Iran of Cyprus attack plot after suspect arrested

JERUSALEM/NICOSIA, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Israel accused Iran on Monday of orchestrating an attempted attack against Israelis in Cyprus after police on the Mediterranean island said an armed individual had been arrested. Iran swiftly denied the accusation.

"This was a terrorist incident directed by Iran against Israeli businesspeople living in Cyprus," Matan Sidi, spokesman for Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, said in a statement.

Libya launches new oil refinery, gas plant project

TRIPOLI, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Libya on Sunday launched a project to build a new oil refinery and a cooking gas plant in the southern city of Ubari.

"Today, we announce the start of the project for a new oil refinery and a cooking gas plant in the south, and all necessary finances are ready," Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah said during the project launch ceremony.

Dbeibah said the project will contribute to the development of southern Libya, vowing that "there will be no more war, only peace and prosperity."
