India: Court acquits rapist in Maha

Thane, Oct 22 (PTI) A court here in Maharashtra has acquitted a 56-year-old man of charges of raping his driver's wife, observing that a "consensual physical relationship" does not amount to rape.

Additional Sessions Judge R R Vaishnav, in his order last Thursday, said the prosecution miserably failed to prove charges of rape against the accused, Dilip Shridhar Patil, a brick kiln owner.

According to the prosecution, the woman's husband worked as a driver for the accused. She got acquainted with the accused as he used to come to their house.

Kashmir: Normal remains affected

Srinagar, Oct 22(PTI) Normal life in Kashmir remained disturbed for the 79th day on Tuesday following abrogation of Article 370, but there was increased movement of traffic in parts of the city leading to massive traffic snarls.

Markets and other business establishments opened early in the morning but downed their shutters at around 11.00 am, officials said.

Indian PM Modi, Nobel laureate Banerjee hold discussions

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held a "healthy and extensive" interaction on various subjects.

Banerjee, an Indian-born American professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has won Nobel in economics, jointly with wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer for "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty".

India: CBI files charge sheet before Delhi court against Chidambaram, Karti, others

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI) The CBI filed a charge sheet before a Delhi court Friday in the INX Media corruption case accusing former finance minister P Chidambaram and others including bureaucrats of causing loss to the exchequer by allegedly committing offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

India: Reliance Jio adds 1.85 lakh Kolkata subscribers in August

Kolkata, Oct 20 (PTI) Telecom operator Reliance Jio has added 1.85 lakh subscribers in August in the city, a company statement said.

The gain in subscribers' base has been fuelled by "fast expansion of its all 4G network coverage and popular Jiophone", it said.

As per TRAI report, the subscriber base stands at 95.84 lakhs as of August, the company said in a statement.

Special Afghan combat unit starts operation for TAPI project security

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- A special combat unit of Afghan security forces has started operation to stabilize Afghanistan's war-ravaged provinces involving a major gas pipeline project, an official said Monday.

Construction work of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project in Afghan territory was inaugurated in February 2018.

However, less works has been done in Afghanistan terrain so far as security issue over the construction and maintenance of the line has remained big concerns.

India: Boy accused of rape commits suicide in observation home

Tirunelveli, Oct 20(PTI) A 17-year-old boy, arrested on charges of raping a woman, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in the government observation home for children here, police said on Sunday.

The child in conflict with law had complained of stomach pain on Saturday night and died on the way to hospital, the police said.

India: Rape accused takes poison as police reach to nab him

Kota (Raj), Oct 20 (PTI) A 25-year-old man accused of raping a minor consumed a poisonous substance as police reached to nab him at Jhalawar's Borkeheji village on Sunday, police said.

He was hiding at his brother-in-law's house at the time of the incident.

He was rushed to a district hospital where he was undergoing treatment, police said, adding that he was stated to be out of danger.

India: NCP seeks suspension of internet around EVM strong rooms

Mumbai, Oct 20 (PTI) The NCP on Sunday demanded suspension of internet services within three km radius of every polling booth in Maharashtra as well as the strong rooms where EVMs will be stored, from the day of voting till the votes are counted.

Polling for all the 288 Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra will be held on Monday. The votes will be counted on October 24.
