UN report on global warming carries life-or-death warning

WASHINGTON; 8 Oct 2018; (AP) — Preventing an extra single degree of heat could make a life-or-death difference in the next few decades for multitudes of people and ecosystems on this fast-warming planet, an international panel of scientists reported Sunday. But they provide little hope the world will rise to the challenge.

The Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued its gloomy report at a meeting in Incheon, South Korea.

Chinese state councilor meets U.S. state secretary, calling for win-win cooperation

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday met with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, saying that China and the United States should follow the right path of win-win cooperation, rather than go astray toward conflict and confrontation.

Wang said Pompeo proposed his visit to China and the Chinese side was willing to arrange meetings.

Death toll of quakes, tsunami climbs to 1,944 as Indonesia to end search mission

JAKARTA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from multiple strong quakes and an ensuing tsunami in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province jumped to 1,944 as of Sunday as the search and rescue operation is expected to be completed on Thursday, military and disaster agency officials said.

Spokesman of joint task force for Central Sulawesi province Col. Infantry Muh Thohir said that a total of 2,549 people were still in hospitals for medical treatment after the disasters hit the central province on Sept. 28.

Former Interpol chief suspected of corruption

BEIJING, October 8. /TASS/. Former Interpol President and China’s Deputy Minister of Public Security Meng Hongwei is suspected of bribery and other crimes, the ministry said in a statement on Monday, adding that a probe was underway.

"Chinese State Council member and Party Committee Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security Zhao Kezhi announced at the October 8 meeting of the committee that Meng Hongwei was suspected of bribery and other crimes. The National Supervisory Commission is conducting a probe against him," the statement reads.

Limo crash kills 20 in U.S. state of New York

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- 20 people were killed on Saturday when a limousine "failed to stop" at an intersection in upstate New York and struck a parked vehicle, police said on Sunday.

The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Saturday when the 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was traveling southwest on Route 30 in Schoharie, about 160 miles (or 257 km) north of New York City, and failed to stop at the intersection with State Route 30 A and then collided with a SUV parked nearby, according to local police.

Rajsthan Minister urinated in open – says its ‘age-old tradition’

Ajmer: Rajasthan’s BJP government minister Shambhu Singh Khetasar was photographed urinating in open. When asked, he defended his action saying urinating in the open is “an age-old tradition”.

According to The Indian Express, “The minister’s remarks come at a time when 27 out of 33 districts in Rajasthan have been declared open-defecation free, according to data on the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) site.”

India: HC allows CBI to file closure report in missing JNU student's case

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Monday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a closure report in the case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing from the university nearly two years ago.

A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel "declined" the plea of the missing student's mother, Fatima Nafees, to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and monitor the probe, thereby removing the CBI from the investigation.

SC to hear plea challenging Rafale deal on October 10

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court will hear a fresh PIL against the Rafale deal between India and France on Wednesday.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph Monday said it will hear the PIL filed by lawyer Vineet Dhanda, who is seeking a direction to the Centre to reveal details of the deal and the comparative prices during the UPA and NDA rule in a sealed cover to the apex court.

The petition also sought information about the contract given to Reliance by Dassault.

Rupee slumps to close at record low

8 Oct 2018; PTI: The rupee slumped by 30 paise to finish at a fresh lifetime low of 74.06 against the US dollar on Monday amid strengthening of the greenback and steady capital outflows.

The rupee had opened lower by 14 paisa against Friday’s close of 73.76 in early trade as the US dollar strength against major global currencies weighed on the rupee sentiment.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency opened lower at 73.89 a dollar against its previous closing of 73.76.

Plea in SC seeks review of Sabarimala judgement

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking review of the Constitution bench judgement which lifted the ban on entry of women into the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala.

The plea, filed by Shylaja Vijayan, president of National Ayyappa Devotees Association, said the September 28 judgment which had allowed entry of women of all ages in the hill-top shrine is "absolutely untenable and irrational, if not perverse".

Minor girl raped by neighbour

Banda (UP), Oct 8 (PTI) A minor girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Attara area here, police said Monday.

The incident took place Sunday when the girl was on the terrace of her house, SHO, Attara, Dinesh Singh said.

The youth was caught by family members who were alerted by her shrieks, he said.

A probe is on in the matter. The accused has been arrested.

Australia committed to Paris agreement: PM

CANBERRA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Australia's prime minister has rejected calls from conservative colleagues to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Speaking ahead of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, Prime Minister Scott Morrison repeated his previous claim that Australia would meet its emissions reduction target "at a canter."

Australia has committed to reducing its emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels by 2030.
