India: Agri mandis should pay more cow cess: Adityanath

Lucknow, Jan 9 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said since the income of agricultural mandis has increased, they should give three per cent cess for cow shelters instead of the existing two per cent.

Some amount of this money could also go to the Animal Husbandry Department, he added while addressing a meeting of the governing council of the State Agricultural Produce Market Board (Manid Parishad) at Lok Bhavan here.

India: PIL against UP govt action on protesters dismissed

Allahabad (UP), Jan 7 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition on the action taken by the Uttar Pradesh government against those who were protesting over the contentious citizenship law.

A two-judge bench, comprising Justices Sudhir Agarwal and Rajeev Mishra, said the petitioner could not show that there was any infringement of legal or fundamental right of an individual or group by the government.

India: HC asks NHRC to investigate police action at AMU

Allahabad, Jan 7 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday asked the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the allegations of police brutality on students of Aligarh Muslim University during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Mohammed Aman Khan of Allahabad, a division bench of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Vivek Varma directed the Commission to complete the process of inquiry expeditiously within one month.

India: Accused Rapist BJP leader Chinmayanand case transferred to special court

Shahjahanpur (UP), Jan 7 (PTI) A district court here has transferred the trial of former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand, accused of sexually exploiting a law student, to a special court for MPs and MLAs.

The trial against the BJP leader, accused of rape by the student, has been going on at the chief judicial magistrate's court here.

He will appear before the special court in the district for the next hearing on January 20, his counsel Om Singh said.

India: Akhilesh, Mayawati condemn violence inside JNU campus

Lucknow, Jan 6 (PTI) Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati condemned the violence inside Jawaharlal Nehru University in which students and teachers were attacked by masked persons.

Hitting out at the Centre, Yadav said that masked men attacking teachers and students in JNU shows how "low" the government will stoop to rule through "fear" adding that the BJP is using violence and hate to polarise society.

India: AMU committee demands resignation of JNU VC

Aligarh, Jan 6 (PTI) The AMU Students Coordination Committee (AMUSCC) has demanded the resignation of JNU Vice Chancellor Prof Jagadesh Kumar, asking him to take "moral responsibility" for the violence in the varsity.

In a statement, AMUSCC said reports from JNU that even medical teams going to assess the injured were prevented by the mob from entering the JNU campus are shocking and only a time-bound judicial inquiry would uncover the full truth.

AMUSCCC is spearheading an agitation against the amended Citizenship Act.

India: Two held for abducting, raping minor in UP

Chitrakoot, Jan 5 (PTI) Two persons have been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl after abducting her in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot district, police said on Sunday.

The accused, Angad and Bhadauti, allegedly raped the girl on Friday night when she had gone to the fields, they said.

The girl returned home on Saturday morning and narrated her ordeal to the family members, following which an FIR was registered and the accused were arrested, police said.

India: 8-yr-boy sodomised by man in UP's Shamli

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 4 (PTI) An eight-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by a man in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said on Saturday.

A complaint was received by police from the victim's family that one Niraj Kumar took the boy to a sugarcane field and sexually assaulted him there, Station House Officer Parbhakar Kentura said.

The incident took place on in the Kandhla area of the district on Friday, he said.

A case was registered against the accused and efforts are on to nab him, Kentura said.

India: Anti-CAA protests: Priyanka visits Meerut

Meerut (UP), Jan 4 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday visited Meerut to meet the families of those killed in violence during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh police had stopped Priyanka and her brother Rahul Gandhi from entering the town on December 24, citing prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC.

At least five people were killed during the protests in Meerut.

India: 21 cows electrocuted at Banda village in UP

Banda (UP), Jan 3 (PTI) At least 21 cows were electrocuted in a government-run gaushala at Khaptiha Kala village here on Friday morning, a senior official said.

The incident took place at Kanha Pashu Ashrey Kendra in Tindwari Development block when the cows came in contact with a wire, District Magistrate Hiralal said.

Terming it an accident, the DM said the matter would be probed after the registration of a case.
