India: Half-day sunshine fails to cheer Kanpurites

Kanpur: Thursday's sunshine brought enough respite for Kanpurites. It is since the morning there was a clear sky helping the sun rays to reach on the living planet in abundance. The people even forgot the tension of the icy days and night till the clouds did not cover the sky.

Undeniably the denizens felt unbearable cold due to the temperature dipping to even level of intolerable zero degree. They anyhow managed to beat the coldest days this winter.

India: Anti-CAA stir: AMU further extends winter break

Aligarh, Jan 1 (PTI) Aligarh Muslim University has further extended the winter break keeping in view the continuing protests against the amended citizenship law in the country.

The university was to reopen on January 6.

According to an AMU notice, the decision to extend the vacations again was taken after a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor on Wednesday.

India: UP seeks ban on PFI for anti-CAA violence

Lucknow, Dec 31 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Police has sought a ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI), days after its complicity was suspected in the recent statewide violent protests against the amended citizenship law.

UP DGP OP Singh said on Tuesday that they had written to the Union Home Ministry, seeking a ban on the PFI after its Uttar Pradesh head, Wasim, and 16 other activists were arrested for allegedly masterminding the violence in the state capital during anti-CAA protests.

India: No place for violence, 'revenge' in country: Priyanka Gandhi

Lucknow, Dec 30 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Monday hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying there is no place for violence or "revenge" in the country.

Addressing a press conference here, the Congress general secretary took a dig at Adityanath's earlier warning that rioters damaging public property will have to pay and said the saffron denotes Hinduism, a religion that does not advocate violence or "revenge".

India: People won't allow NRC implementation: Priyanka Gandhi

Lucknow, Dec 30 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra here on Monday asserted that the National Register of Citizenship cannot be implemented in the country as "people won't allow it".

"The NRC is not a valid certificate of citizenship. The NRC has no relationship with valid citizenship certificate. Chief ministers of the Congress-ruled states have said that it will not be implemented in their states," she said.

India: Anti-CAA stir: Sambhal admin serves notices on 59 people

Sambhal, Dec 30 (PTI) The district administration here has served notices on 59 persons for allegedly damaging public property during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, and official said on Monday.

Confirming it, Additional District Magistrate Kamlesh Awasthi on Monday said so far notices against the damage worth Rs 15.35 lakh had been served on 59 people.

When asked that those given notices were claiming to be innocent, Awasthi said, "The notices have been issued. They have to answer. Everyone will be given full opportunity of hearing."

India: Invisible ink' may help detect fake currency

Greater Noida, Dec 30 (PTI) Scientists at Shiv Nadar University here have developed a low-cost security ink that may help detect counterfeit currency, and could be employed in official documents and medical diagnosis.

The new ink, described in the peer-reviewed Journal of Physical Chemistry C, offers improved security features compared to existing inks that are multi-component and, therefore, more expensive, the researchers said.

India: NPR, NRC against poor, minorities: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Dec 29 (PTI) SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said the National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) were against the poor people and minorities of the country, while asserting that he will not fill up the NPR form.

Addressing a press conference at the Samajwadi Party (SP) headquarters here, he said, "Be it the NPR or the NRC, these are against the poor people, minorities and Muslims of the country."
