India: Ganga Yatra reaching here on January 31

Kanpur: City will be the culminating point of the five-day Ganga Yatra launching today. It covers districts like Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Allahabad and Fatehpur respectively.

All the districts are situated on the banks of the river. A big public meeting would be held at quite a famous Ganga Barrage on ensuing January 31. 

The salient feature of this much-publicised yatra is to make the rural people aware of the ongoing namami gangey drive to rid the holy river of the dreadful pollution.

India: Bars in five-star UP hotels to stay open till 4 am

Lucknow, Jan 27 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to allow bars in big cities to remain open up to 2 am and those in five-star hotels till 4 am, an hour later than earlier.

Principal secretary Sanjay Bhoosreddy told PTI that the decision, which will come into effect on April 1, is meant for the convenience of guests, particularly foreigners.

India: AMU Vice Chancellor heckled at R Day function

Aligarh, Jan 26 (PTI) AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor was on Sunday heckled by a group of students during his Republic Day speech here soon after he termed as "unfortunate" the recent happenings on the campus and said peaceful protests will be allowed on any issue within the ambit of law.

The incident occurred when the VC was addressing the Republic Day function held amid tight security at the Aligarh Muslim University, which has been rocked by protests by students and teachers against the amended citizenship law.

India: Tenant, owner will pay if house tax remains unpaid

Kanpur: It has been referred that the Nagar Nigam will now realise the house tax both from the house owner as well as the tenant if the landlord default in paying the tax within the given period.

An opinion to this effect has been unfolded by the city mayor Pramila Pandey at a meeting held with the disgruntled traders of various committees here. She made it that the NN would realize the house tax from both the entities in the case of outstanding dues.

India: Harassed by in-laws, woman commits suicide in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 26 (PTI) A woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her home over alleged harassment by in-laws here, police said on Sunday.

Priti, 27, was found hanging from the ceiling of her room in Jagadhri village located under the Titawi police station on Saturday, they said.

India: Students find themselves at school on Sunday

Kanpur: Students felt odd at going to their respective schools on Sunday being the Republic Day. They never realized that they would have to attend the school on a weekly holiday. However, they attended to join the gathering on a very important occasion.

On talking to a group of students it was known that none among them was feeling good at attending the school on Sunday, but they had to obey the order. They participated in the flag-hoisting programme and Yoga too.

City's meat shops to remain closed on Sunday

Kanpur: In accordance with the state government's order the municipal corporation has ordered to keep the meat shops in its precincts closed on Republic Day tomorrow.

Giving this order the veterinary officer Dr AK Singh said that all meat shops including mutton and fish would remain closed on Sunday in abidance of the order.

India: Oppn slams UP CM for warning to anti-CAA protesters

Lucknow, Jan 23 (PTI) The opposition parties on Thursday slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for warning anti-CAA protesters that "azadi" slogans raised by them will be treated as sedition.

While the Samajwadi Party drew an analogy with the British rule, the Congress termed it "a language of dictators".

India: Woman kept hostage and raped for 5 days in UP's Bhadohi

Bhadohi (UP), Jan 24 (PTI) An 18 year-old married woman was allegedly kept hostage and raped for five days by a man in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district, police said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Vishal Saroj, who hails from the same village as that of the woman. The woman got married three months back.

India: Friday brought sun's warmth substantially

Kanpur: After a gap of several weeks the Jajmauites passed Friday in the full bright sun over the head. Ample sunshine made them enjoy the warmth in the midst of nature's bounties. 

Despite the cloudy weather, the Sunrays were reaching in an ample quantity on the living earth. Though the minimum temperature stays at 5 degrees Celsius, the sun provided substantial respite to the residents living in tannery town here.
