India: Case against Akhilesh for violation of poll code

Etawah, Feb 21 (PTI) A case for the violation of the election code has been registered against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav as he spoke to the media inside a polling centre when voting was in progress, an official said on Monday.

District Magistrate Shruti Singh said on Sunday when polling was in progress at a polling centre in Abhinav School of Saifai, Yadav spoke to reporters, the video of which surfaced on social media.

The Saifai SDM and the Circle Officer were asked to probe the matter.

India: PIL seeks stay on 'Why I killed Gandhi' streaming

Allahabad, Feb 21 (PTI) A public interest litigation has been filed in the Allahabad High Court seeking a stay on the streaming of the short film, 'Why I killed Gandhi'.

The PIL contended that the display of the film may disturb communal harmony in Uttar Pradesh during the ongoing Assembly elections.

India: Rape victim commits suicide in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Feb 22 (PTI) A 19-year-old rape survivor allegedly hanged herself in her house in Chandpur village here, officials said on Tuesday.

According to Circle Officer Vinay Gautam, the body of the girl was found hanging from the ceiling in her house under Shahpur police station area on Monday.

No suicide note was found and investigations are on, he said.

According to her family, she was alone in the house when the incident took place. Her father Satish had gone to his work while her mother was in the fields.

India: UP polls: Priyanka Gandhi begins road show in Lucknow

Lucknow, Feb 21 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday began a major road show in the state capital to drum up support for party candidates ahead of the February 23 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress general secretary sat atop an SUV along with party candidate Lalan Kumar from Bakshi ka Talab constituency as they went on a door-to-door campaign in the Chinhat area.

Monday also marks the last day of campaigning for the fourth phase polls.

India: Stillness prevail before polling day but voters ready to vote in Kanpur

Kanpur: The stillness before elections was certainly prevailing here on Saturday. Nothing of the politics was proceeding due to the end of the canvassing. However, the voters are prepared to vote for.

India: Jajmau's Saraiya residents raise issue of 'Sadak nahi, vote nahi'

Kanpur: "Sadak nahi, vote nahi," is written on the banner at the entrance of Saraiya lane in Jajmau locality here.

This is a way to express resentment, say, the people of the area.

This older lane seemed to have not been repaired for long. Just at the entrance, a big mound can be seen even to this day, they further added.

It was supposed to be dug up for some purpose but the work remained incomplete. The ire of the people persists on account of the negligence.

India: FIR against 20 women in Ghaziabad for protesting for hijab

Ghaziabad, Feb 16 (PTI) Twenty women were booked here for carrying out a protest rally in favour of hijab without permission, police here said on Wednesday.

The protest was held on Sunday and a video of it was also found circulating on social media today.

The video purportedly showed a few cops, male and female, using batons to disperse the protesting women.

The rally was held in Shani Bazaar market of Navneet Vihar colony, Circle officer, Indirapuram, Abhay Kumar Mishra said.

India: UP minister assures support to Owaisi's attackers

Noida, Feb 16 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh minister Sunil Bharala on Wednesday announced support to the two persons arrested by the state police for attack on AIMIM chief and Lok Sabha MP Asadaddin Owaisi.

Bharala assured the families of the accused -- Sachin Sharma and Shubham -- of fair probe into the February 4 attack on Owaisi in western UP in which the parliamentarian escaped gunshots fired at his car.

India: UP polls; 64.42 per cent voting in 2nd phase

Lucknow, Feb 15 (PTI) An estimated 64.42 per cent voting was recorded in the second phase of the assembly elections in 55 constituencies spread over nine districts in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, according to the Election Commission.

Saharanpur recorded a turnout of 71.13 per cent, Bijnor 65.91, Moradabad 67.26, Sambhal 62.87, Rampur 64.26, Amroha 71.98, Budaun 59.24, Bareilly 61.67 and Shahjahanpur 59.34 per cent, a statement issued by the election office said here on Tuesday.
