India: NGT refuses to unseal Haj House in Ghaziabad

New Delhi, Jun 26 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal Wednesday refused to unseal the Haj House in Ghaziabad for failing to setup a sewage treatment plant (STP).

The Haj House in Uttar Pradesh's Arthala village is an under-construction seven-storey building located near the Hindon river and it was sealed last year.

A vacation bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore said the plea filed by the Uttar Pradesh State Haj Committee cannot be allowed as a larger bench has already passed orders in the matter.

India: Relative rapes eight-year-old in UP village

Gorakhpur (UP), Jun 26 (PTI) An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 45-year-old relative who attacked her while she was sleeping in a village here, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, a resident of Sarkanda village of Mau district in Uttar Pradesh was arrested on Tuesday evening, they said.

The incident took place on Saturday in Gorakhpur's Sikriganj area when the accused came to the girl's house for some work and allegedly raped her, Superintendent of Police (south) Vipul Kumar Srivastava said.

India: Two brothers beaten to death in UP

Shahjahanpur (UP), Jun 27 (PTI) Two brothers were beaten to death by a group of 12 people in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district, with police suspecting it to be case of enmity.

The incident took place in Dokri Kalan village on Wednesday night.

Twelve men, armed with lathis, attacked the bothers --Vijendra (55) and Bhusi (48) -- when they were sleeping in a hut at an agricultural field, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pramanad Pandey said Thursday.

India: Mayor's ire over engineers for water-logging

Kanpur: The Mayor's wrath was worth realizing at the water-logging in the city. She did not budge in condemning the officers' laxity in nullah cleaning work. The height of their inactiveness was that they were not ready to accept faults. Instead they were finding faults with one another. 

The Mayor Pramila Pandey said three executive engineers of Nagar Nigam and JAL Nigam were found irresponsible and she would recommend the state government for the transfer.

India: City's crossings to get uplift for smooth traffic

Kanpur: To improve city's traffic system as many as 26 crossings have been chosen for issuance of the Challan directly. The work on fixing timer has also been ordered. The KDA will bear the expenses on this facility. No anarchy will be allowed on the roads.  Encroachment will not be tolerated at any cost. Helmet for the two-wheelers and seat belt for the cars will remain a must.

India: Married woman killed in UP for dowry

Muzaffarnagar, Jun 25 (PTI) A 36-year-old married woman was allegedly killed for dowry at Simbhalka village under Shamli district, police said on Tuesday.

Sumita, wife of Krishan Kumar, was strangled to death on Monday and her body was thrown on the roadside, they said.

A case was registered against the victim's in-laws including her husband who is absconding, the police said, adding that the body has been sent for postmortem.

India: Govindnagar bye-poll: candidate yet to be declared

Kanpur: With the start of preparations to contest the bye-polls of the coming state assembly, the BJP has entrusted its deputy chief minister Keshav Mauraya and the party vice-president Ranjana Upadhaya with the responsibility to see Govind Nagar seat here and decide over the candidature.

India: BJP MP gheraoed for alternative housing arrangement

Kanpur: Hundreds of people started raising  slogans against the BJP member of parliament at the gate of his Kakadev residence here on Sunday afternoon. Sensing the gravity of the matter the MP along with ex-MLA met the agitators and assured them of needful action. 

The assembled people were demanding that their houses should not be dismantled. He told them very specifically that the land belonged to the army. His talk with the District Magistrate could bring positive results. They will be provided with piece of land at another alternative location. 

India: Rape-accused BSP MP surrenders in court

Varanasi (UP), Jun 22 (PTI) Newly elected Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Atul Rai, who has been accused of rape, surrendered in a court here on Saturday.

The judicial magistrate (first) remanded Rai in 14-day judicial custody.

An FIR was registered against Rai on May 1 on a complaint by a college student who had alleged that he took her home on the pretext of meeting his wife but sexually assaulted her.
