India: 1 DSP, 3 SIs and 4 constables killed in encounter with criminals

Lucknow, Jul 3 (PTI) At least eight Uttar Pradesh police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police, were killed in an encounter with criminals in Kanpur, police said on Friday.

The encounter took place when the police team was trying to arrest Vikas Dubey, a history sheeter facing 60 criminal cases, in Dikru village under Chaubeypur police station on the intervening night of July 2 and 3, they said.

India: 17 Tablighi Jamaat members released on bail in UP

Bahraich (UP), Jul 2 (PTI) Seventeen members of the Tablighi Jamaat from Indonesia and Thailand, who were arrested in March, have been released on bail, police said on Thursday.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Navneet Kumar Bharti on Wednesday ordered their release on surety of Rs 25,000 each.

The foreigners, 10 from Indonesia and seven from Thailand, were arrested in March under various sections, including the Passport Act, the Foreigners' Act and the Epidemic Act.

India: Babri trial: Uma Bharti appears before CBI court

Lucknow, Jul 2 (PTI) Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti Thursday appeared in person before a special court here conducting trial in the 1992 Babri mosque demolition case.

The special CBI court is currently recording the statements of 32 accused under CrPC section 313 (court's power to examine the accused), a stage in the trial that follows the examination of prosecution witnesses.

The 61-year-old saffron clad BJP leader is the 19th accused to depose before the court in the over 27-year-old case.

India: Adityanath govt 'trampling' democracy: UP Cong chief

Lucknow, Jul 2 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu on Thursday accused the BJP government of "trampling" democracy in the state by misusing the police and termed the arrest of the party's minority cell chairman Shahnawaj Alam as illegal, undemocratic and condemnable .

"Congress workers are being harassed across the state by the Yogi Adityanath government and being implicated in false cases. The BJP government is oppressive and is trampling democracy by misusing police," the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief said.

India: Online classes are not like regular schooling

KANPUR: The online classes are the result of the pandemic. The regular classes are not possible in such a risky situation. Those students who have joined online classes in this very month of July say it remains a satisfactory experience for them.

On audio and video qualities they stated that we received the network signals properly so there was no immediate trouble in grasping the voice of the teacher. Also, the video quality was not too bad to follow. The teacher even asked the question from the students attending the online classes.

India: Educational institutes to remain shut till July 31 in UP

Lucknow, Jun 30 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday issued guidelines for the next phase of the coronavirus lockdown from July 1 to 31 and said all educational institutes will remain closed during the period.

It, however, said online classes will continue in the state.

All schools, colleges and coaching centres will remain closed till July 31, though online classes will continue in the state, UP's Chief Secretary R K Tiwari said in a statement issued here.

India: Junior students find online classes languorous

KANPUR: When the online classes are getting prominence, the junior class students are finding it too hard to join in the morning. They appear to be abhorring this kind of teaching as they don't show up enthusiasm in getting up early in the morning.

Normally, when they were attending classes at the school they looked too responsible to prepare for the school early in the morning. Perhaps it was due to being habitual of timing and norm. Since the schools have not opened they seemed to have developed a lethargic behaviour.  

India: Occultist arrested for raping woman in Greater Noida

Noida (UP), Jul 1 (PTI) An occultist was arrested in Greater Noida on Wednesday for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of finding solutions to her family problems, police said.

The incident took place on Monday in the Rabupura police station area when the 20-year-old woman's husband took her to the occultist, 35, officials said.

The couple met the accused at his residence in nearby Faleda village from where he took them to a farmland.

India: UP Congress leader held in connection with anti-CAA stir

Lucknow, Jun 30 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Congress minority cell chief Shahnawaz Alam has been arrested in connection with violence during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the state capital last year, police said on Tuesday.

"Alam was arrested from Hazratganj area on Monday night in connection with an FIR registered at the Hazratganj police station in connection with the violent protest during an anti-CAA agitation on December 19 last year. Alam's location was found near the violence spot," a senior police official said.

India: Father hugs dead child, says doctors didn't attend

Kannauj (UP), Jun 29 (PTI) In a heart-wrenching incident caught on tape, parents were seen grieving over the death of their one-year-old child at a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj.

An emotional father was seen clinging to the body of his son Anuj who died of fever after he was brought to the district hospital there for treatment on Sunday night.

Premchand, a resident of Mishripur village in Kannauj district, is heard alleging in the video that no doctor saw his child.
