India: Locusts attack crops, trees in Banda, Mahoba districts

Banda/Mahoba (UP), Jun 19 (PTI) A swarm of locusts attacked trees and crops in several villages in Banda and Mahoba districts, farmers and officials said on Friday.

The swarm came from the jungles of the neighbouring Panna and Chhatarpur districts of Madhya Pradesh and entered Kartal, Bolharka, Maharajpur, Manpur, Pukari, Ragoli and Babupur villages in Banda on Thursday evening, they said.

Farmers said the locusts attacked vegetables sown in one kilometre area in an hour and returned to the jungles in Madhya Pradesh.

India: Woman raped in UP on moving bus by driver

Noida (UP), Jun 17 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman travelling with her children from Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh to Noida was allegedly raped on a moving bus by one its two drivers early on Wednesday, police said.

The accused is absconding, police said, adding that the other driver has been held for allegedly intimidating her.

According to police, the incident apparently took place on a stretch between Lucknow and Mathura.

India: Another accused deposes before CBI court in Babri case

Lucknow, Jun 18 (PTI) A special CBI court hearing the Babri demolition case on Thursday recorded the statement of accused Vinay Kumar Rai.

He was the 12th accused to depose before the court, which is conducting day-to-day proceedings in order to conclude the trial by August 31, as directed by the Supreme Court.

There are 32 people who are facing a trial for the conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure in Ayodhya in 1992.

Special Judge S K Yadav will hold proceedings on June 19 as well.

Lamenting at the sudden decline in their particular profession owing to more than two-month-long lockdown one boat maker pointed out that we were badly facing hard days due to dearth of the customers. Thereby this trend had brought our position to a very wretched level.

India: UP Congress chief granted bail

Lucknow, Jun 16 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday granted bail to UP Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu while questioning his party's offer to provide buses for migrant workers, the issue which triggered a row with the state government and also led to his arrest.

The Lucknow bench of the high court said it is "disturbing" that the state government and the party were at loggerheads over the issue.

India: Standing under hot tin shed consumers deposit electricity bill

KANPUR: Depositing electricity bill at the single computerised window counter at the power sub-station near JK Colony in Jajmau here remains the harrowing task. The tin shed where the consumers stand in the queue for reaching the window gives a big discomfort to them. The shed becomes quite hotter in the day time. As a result, the consumers try hard to suffer the harsh temperature. They have to tolerate however hot the shed turns in the bright sun.

India: Residents remain cautious to stay safe from corona

KANPUR: One said: "The corona has made us so scared as we had to think thrice before venturing to come out of the house." Another conscientious resident told: "It was time to observe complete attention to maintain the precautions."

There is no end to the fresh cases of the coronavirus. More corona cases were reported after the lockdown finished in the city here. People were embracing cautions like wearing a face mask, social distancing and others but one or more patients were emerging day after day.

India: Migrant woman gives birth on way home in a truck

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jun 15 (PTI) A migrant woman gave birth to a boy in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district when she was on her way from Himachal Pradesh to her native place with her husband, an official said.

The woman was travelling with her husband on a truck to Badaun district when she complained to labour pain on the Khatima-Panipat highway near Miranpur town on Sunday evening, according to the official.

Jansath primary health centre incharge Ashok Kumar said Arti was rushed to the centre where she gave birth to the child.

India: MP Guv Lalji Tandon still in ICU

Lucknow, Jun 15 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon continues to be in the ICU of a private hospital here, officials said on Monday.

"He is undergoing intensive treatment," Medanta Hospital Director Dr Rakesh Kapoor told PTI.

Tandon, 85, was admitted to the hospital on the morning of June 11 with breathing problems, difficulty in urination and fever.

On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the hospital and enquired about his health.
