India: Muslims offer Alvida prayer within closed doors

KANPUR: Lockdown leaves the faithful to offer Alvida prayer at the house. The congregational prayers were not possible owing to the administrative restrictions.

On the last Friday of the holy month of Ramazan, the Muslims offered the month's Final Friday prayer on the neat space available within the house. 

Fear of the Corona has restricted them to observe social distancing. The rule of three persons is suiting the offering of the prayer within the house. As the houses are not quite larger these days, space for prayer is made anyway.

India: Migrant worker commits suicide in home quarantine in UP

Banda (UP), May 23 (PTI) A migrant who had recently returned from Mumbai allegedly committed suicide while in home quarantine in a village here, police said.

Sunil (19) had arrived at Musivan village under Kamasin Police Station area five days ago on a Shramik special train. He committed suicide by hanging himself on Friday, police said.

The body had been sent for post-mortem examination, SHO of Kamasin Police Station, Omkar Singh said on Saturday.

India: UP govt invokes ESMA for 6 months

Lucknow, May 22 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) banning strikes in all departments and corporations under it for a period of six months.

The ESMA, as it is commonly known, gives the police right to arrest without a warrant anybody violating the Act's provisions. It has been invoked after taking permission from Governor Anandiben Patel and a notification in this regard has been issued by Mukul Singhal, Additional Chief Secretary, a senior official said on Friday.

India: Ambedkar statue found damaged, tension in UP village

Bhadohi, May 23 (PTI) A statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar was found damaged in Lakshmana village in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district on Saturday, leading to tension in the area, police said.

The 6-feet statue, installed in Dalit Basti of the village under the Aurai Police Station limits, was found damaged on Saturday morning, Additional SP Ravindra Verma said.

The incident led to tension in the area as people started gathering. Police were rushed to the area, the ASP said.

India: Blazing sun restricts movement during afternoon

KANPUR: Anyone coming out on the road during the middle of the day can easily perceive the hot dangerous heat of the summer's sun. The blaze appears to be striking upon us. 

The highest temperature stayed at 43° Celsius on Friday afternoon. It was quite difficult for us to bear the hot weather.

One said: It was too hot to endure the sun's heat. The weather conditions are not helping us. How can one make the courage to move? 

Another stated: The climatic conditions are becoming hotter and hotter every other day.

India: 15-yr-old girl abducted, raped by three youths in UP

Muzaffarnagar, May 22 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by three youths in the Purkazi area here, police said on Friday.

The girl was picked up from her house by the three accused and taken to a secluded place where she was raped, Station House Officer Subhash Gautam said.

The incident came to light on Thursday when the girl came back to home and narrated her ordeal to the parents, he said.

A case under relevant sections of law has been registered against the accused, Gautam said.

India: Bomb threat against Adityanath, police register FIR

Lucknow, May 22 (PTI) Police have registered an FIR after receiving a WhatsApp message threatening to kill Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The sender used objectionable language against Adityanath in the message sent on police headquarter's WhatsApp number, calling him a threat to particular community, a senior police officer said.

The unknown sender threatened to blow him up with a bomb, the officer said.

India: UP Congress Committee president granted bail, rearrested in bus row cases

Lucknow, May 20 (PTI) UPCC President Ajay Kumar Lallu was granted bail by an Agra court on Wednesday and released before being rearrested by a team of Lucknow police in a second case filed here in connection with the Congress' standoff with the UP government over arrangement of buses for migrant workers.

Media convenor of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) Lallan Kumar said Lallu was granted bail and released by a local court in Agra on a personal bond of Rs 20,000 on Wednesday afternoon.

India: Barabanki emerges as COVID-19 hotspot; 95 new cases

Barabanki (UP) May 21 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district has emerged as the new COVID-19 hotspot as 95 new cases of the virus were reported in a single day, half of them migrant workers returning from other states.

District Magistrate, Barabanki, Aadarsh Kumar, said on Wednesday that of the 245 samples sent for testing on May 15-16, 95 have been found positive.

Among those who tested positive, 49 are migrants who had recently returned from other states, the DM said, adding that all have been admitted to hospital as per the protocol.
